Hi!
Im debating over whether to take up singing lessons or not. The teacher i want to go to is very expensive and my parents want to know whether i can get more that just pleasure out of singing (i play violin and piano already you see). I suspect it will but will singing lessons improve my aural (I am told G7+ aural is very difficult)

Hmm.
I took up singing lessons because I loved to sing but had no idea about the technical side of it- and also to help with aural stuff.
I still have lessons, mainly because my teacher is great! But other than that, I could happily sing in concerts now without the aid of a teacher.
But it has helped my aural skills a bit.. i'll definitely say that. I'd give it a hard thought though, I think you really need to love singing and be passionate about it! It's very relaxing and fun =)

Well, singing will help your aural skills, undoubtedly.
But it will also help improve your posture, increase your confidence and give you the chance to make music with other people - choirs are the best socialising I know.
And it's a great stress-reliever. There's nothing like belting out an aria at the top of your voice when you're fed up to make life feel a lot better.

I would go along with Tiger Vio in saying you need to love it.
I quite like singing and was in a lrage local choir for over 20 years but I did not settle to singing lessons.
I just couldn't deal with practising singing as I had always seen it as something you just do, if that makes sense.
As a singing teacher I would say go for it. Find someone who is reasonably prices and that you get on with. Yes it will help you with your aural. Ring around, you will soon get a feel for the teacher that way.
Look with someone who either has a Diploma in Singing or a Batchelors degree where singing was an important component. Teachers who have studied Instrumental Knowlege for voice are particularly useful as they will undertand the mechanics of voice production.
Anyone who promises you that you will be on the west-end stage in 6 months is probably a charlatan so avoid.
