For starters, do NOT expect it to be like a piano!

Ok What do I need to do to get it to play?

You need specific stops in place for a specific sound, and pressing a key gives you 1 note at a fixed volume. The action isn't the same as a piano so you can hit as hard or soft as you want but volume won't change without altering some gizmos

Hi Ben

Hope you'll enjoy your time on the organ - it's a fabulous instrument! I hope someone is going to give you a "driving lesson" so you can get the most from your time on the organ? You need to be shown how to combine stops etc to get the best sounds - just pulling them all out may make a fantastic noise but won't necessarily make it sound good.

If you plan to start to try to play seriously, you'll need to decide what to wear on your feet. In general, organists I know do not recommend trainers etc. Some people play in socks, others have special shoes with leather soles that move smoothly around the pedals.

Anyway, for now, enjoy! smile.gif

Start with something for manuals only . The progress onto stuff like Kevin Mayhew's mainly manuals.

A good first stop to use is the 8ft open diapason. You can then build choruses using 4ft and 2ft pipes in the diapason family.

The next group to experiment with is the flute pipes, before you do anything with the reeds.

If you do use your feet try and find a 16ft Bourdon as your fundimental pipe.

If there are preset pistons set up is is sometime worthwhile experimenting with these, but some of these can sound disasterous.

Good luck!

Remember you have no pedal, and if the action is Tracker its nice and positive, but gets very heavy if you pull everything else.

If you enjoy, get yourself a teacher. (I am not one, I just page turned for a college friend who imparted a lot of theory to me)
