Full Version: Strings Strengthen On Hand!

Hi!

I play violin and piano. On piano i find one hand weaker than the other. My piano teacher says this may be due to the fact that i constantly move my fingers quite a lot when playing violin, hence making htem stronger.

What do you think?

Interesting question!
I visited a museum recently where you could measure the strength of each hand. My right hand was hugely stronger than my left (I play piano, bassoon and recorders) - should I take up violin to redress the balance? Maybe not! Actually I do think I've improved my left hand a lot over the past few years, but I have a piece at the moment where the melody line occasionally drifts from right hand to left and I do struggle with that! And cantabile seems so much more effective when it happens in the right hand part.

I play piano and violin. I am a right hander. When I learn piano, I find that my left hand is quite weak at times and had to work more with it. Now, after learning violin, I find that I can easily play huge chords with my left hands without actually had to strain it. And my left hand is stronger than before. So, that's it! Haha..if not, I have to really hit hard when playing the piano with my left hand!

My left hand has become somewhat stronger since I started learning the violin, so I guess it does make a difference... unless you've already strenghtened your left hand on the piano by doing lots of drills and exercises. tongue.gif

I constantly find that my right side in general is stronger than my left, as I use my right hand a bit more in the piano pieces that I play, as the right hand is more ornamented. My right arm is also stronger as I play badminton with it a lot too...When I'm doing scales hands separately I often find that the right hand scales come a lot easier than the left..I may consider getting some of those weight things to balance it out, I dunno... unsure.gif

I definitely used to notice a considerable difference between left and right hands. Despite being right-handed, my left hand was always at least as strong if not stronger, and always had bigger ring sizes etc. Now that I play piano more than violin, and since I haven't had violin lessons for almost a decade, the difference is minimal, and my right hand is probably now the more nimble of the two.

Hmm I think that could be true. My left hand has stregnthened since I've been playing guitar, which is probably because if your right handedyou make the chord shapes with your left hand, then flute you sort of use both hands equally. Piano is usually more on the right hand.
