What's NSSO?!?

National Schools' Symphony Orchestra, I think it's sort of the 2nd one after the NYO.

i think that is kind of equal to NCO (National Children's Orchestra?), which is one below NYO, although they have nothing to do with each other. Well done on getting in to it!

I thought the NCO was under age 13 and only asked for grade 7? And had 5 different orchestras?
Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

NSSO are meant to be an equivalent to the NYO, but since it runs when state schools are still at school they can only take people from private schools, so obviously they don't get the really good players from state schools which seems a bit daft - but my friend who has been in the NCO, NSSO and NYO (in that order) said the NSSO was like a big version of the NYO, and the woodwind/percussion sections and principal chairs in the NYO were better.

sorry you are quite right. What do you mean by saying 'NSSO was like a big version of the NYO?'

Hi

I'm in the Pontefract Youth String Orchestra, grade 4 and upwards, audition required. What a long title! I play viola, every saturday morning at half ten.

Yes, I believe being a viola player has great opportunity in entering orchestras...As a violist myself, I was requested to join three local youth (and also professional) orchestras...I really don't know which to choose.

Physical numbers, it's a pretty big Symphony Orchestra as they go.

Hey Lixandreth did you do Worldsong at the RAH last year?? I did with Andover Youth Chior.

I'm not in any Youth Orchestra, I was in Andover Area Chamber String Orchestra but I quit and I'm now in Andover Light Orchestra, and "adult" orchestra!!

NSSO's a great orchestra, I was in it for three years, the best three weeks of my life! (bar uni tongue.gif )

You'll have a great time, the conductor's fantastic and the people are awesome.

You're wrong about the state school thing though, I went to a state school and it was never a problem getting the time off, especially as it's the last week of term. Where's the course this year? And what are you playing?

If you've got any questions about NSSO, PM me.

Oh ok, that's what I'd heard but you're obviously right!!

It's at Wellington this year (bit posh, very pretty buildings) and the concert is at Reading Uni. We're doing the Bruch violin concerto with a soloist from the LSO, and the rest is TBA depending on who accepts places or something.

Hey, you must know the person who told me about the NSSO in the 1st place! I'll PM you.

Ah, I think the NSSO (or some similar orchestra, I'm not sure) is the reason our first Horn in the wind band is deserting us for our Barcelona tour dry.gif (Which is also the last week of term - ish). This is a shame as he's very entertaining and a good player (plus he apparently got slightly plastered on tour last time, which I would have killed to see). On the plus side, though (well...sort of), this means I get a temporary promotion to 1st Horn and potentially top orchestra 2nd Horn as well. We're a little short on Horns at the moment.

The only person I've seen slightly tipsy on tour so far is my current music teacher - it resulted in him being captured by a hen party on the ferry back (he got married the week after, but hopefully not a member of the hen party!). I'm fairly sure one of the trumpet players still has the photos laugh.gif

Who's your horn friend? I'll probably know them?

Also, bohemia I think that they haven't updated the programme for this summer, as we did the Bruch Violin Concerto last course, which was held at Wellington.

If you are at Wellington College again, you'll love it! The grounds are gorgeous, and it's huge!

Probably last year then - I was told via email that I'm in, the letter is at home but I'm abroad on holiday so I am yet to see it.

Just to everyone else, turns out hornplayer is actually the person who (in a roundabout way) told me the NSSO existed...small world and all that!

i play in our school music centre band, which is pretty good. its massive, cos do many ppl from our school learn instruments (only 1 oboe tho.... mad.gif biggrin.gif ) i'd really love to be in a proper youth orchestra tho, but i have no idea if there is one around where i live, probably not, i dont think. i should imagine the nearest would be around carlisle. i hate living in the middle of no where!!! i want to play my oboe, lol!!
