I keep being recommended this piece but it's really expensive new, so when I saw it 2nd hand on ebay I snapped it up!

Haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but wondered if people who know the piece have any suggestions of which movement would be best to start with, and any bright ideas of recordings that are good that I might be able to listen to snippets of on Amazon?

Any help appreciated! I'll let you know how I get on when I've had the chance to play it...

Is that the one thomxxx put on the recordings site? If it is that one it sounds good.

Are we talking about the Hummel Flute and Piano Sonata in D major, Op. 50?

Hi Sarah. I was after that Hummel as well, but ebay didn't send me a reminder and I missed it! I'm glad it went to a good home, and my student was happy to have a new copy, as her other two grade 7 pieces come from books she already has. smile.gif

I'm working on this sonata as well at the moment. I played the last movement in my flute lesson last week, because my teacher doesn't know it and I thought it would be better to play it with the accompaniment so he could get a better idea of it. However, I'd suggest you work thorugh from the beginning, because the sonata makes more sense as a whole. And I think the first few bars are an absolutely stunning opening - I heard someone play this on the flute summer school I went on, and I just thought 'Wow'! Try seeing the whole piece as opera, and you won't go far wrong.

As for recordings, there's one on the Naxos website. I think you can hear the first 30 secs of each movement if you're not a subscriber, but I think paying the annual sub of $19.99 is an absolute bargain for complete access to their catalogue.

Thanks Andante, that's given me a few ideas! I may be picking your brains again at a later date...

Sorry I pipped you to the post as it were rolleyes.gif I often think when I am bidding on ebay that sooner or later I'll end up bidding against someone on here whether I realise it or not... I'll have to make sure I work hard at it and learn it now, so that you can rest assured it's gone to a good home... smile.gif

I had a listen to the Amazon files, it does sound like a lovely piece, thanks for recommending it so often - it stuck eventually laugh.gif
