Recently, I tried to tune the violin strings. But I had a hard time, no matter what, my D-String always seem to be out of tune.I can't get it right even though with the help of the piano. I am at the beginner stage now. Will greatly appreciate any advices or tips how to tune the violin. smile.gif

You could alwaays try an electronic tuner which will show you if you're sharp or flat and a green light will show when you're in tune.

You could try this free software tuner for PC/Mac: http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/%7Etuner/tuner_e.html . It will show whether you are high or low in pitch. Use A-440 as your pitch standard.

What's the problem - is it a matter of getting the string in tune or is it a matter of the pegs slipping once it is in tune?

It sounds to me as if the peg won't stick at the exact spot for D. Or it slips. Or the string is old - sometimes old strings just won't tune properly, or sound weird.

Also, are you saying it sounds out of tune with a D on a piano, or a tuning fork or pitch pipes or on electronic tuner, or in relation to the other strings?

You'd need a pretty decent mic rigged up to the computer to make this sensitive enough I think.

may seem obvious, but you could try using the adjusters (if you aren't already) instead of the pegs!
