Full Version: Aural Tests?

I was just wondering - once you've passed the aural test for a particular grade, do you have to do it every time you sit an instrument at that grade? And, for example, if you've passed aural at grade 8 do you have to take lower grade aurals for other instruments?

I'm guessing the answer is that you have to retake the aural everytime, as it's built into the markng system. But have been thinking it seems a bit silly, since it seems to be the same test for every instrument (or am I misunderstanding that part?)

Yes, you do have to take the aural test each time. And yes, there are times that it can create quite an anomaly.

For example, the last ABRSM grade I did was Grade 8 singing. The next one I'll do will be Grade 1 violin. So I'll have done Grade 8 aural tests followed by Grade 1 tests......

I know some music examination boards do offer exemption (with full marks) from aural tests where one has sat practical musicianship of a sufficient grade for the exam in question. They may also, if I recall, offer an aural marks transfer service between equivalent grades too.

If the AB implemented such a system it would be a definite earner: exams would be shorter in some cases, but they could charge the same; and more people might be inclined to take practical musicianship exams smile.gif.

I think I rather overdid the detail in my grade 1 treble exam laugh.gif

I had never done those tests before - I did my grade 1 violin about 18 years ago with a different board. It was quite strange not really knowing what to expect laugh.gif

I'm doing this too .... I'm doing grade 2 cello next month, so my gap isn't quite as big as Katyjay's or andante-in-C's.
