Hello, i have been playing flute for 4 years and i am about to take my grade 4 next month. I failed my sight reading in grade 3 (by one mark) is there any advice anyone can offer on how to improve on my sight reading and it would be really nice to hear from other flute players about there experience of taking the grade 4 exam.
Thanks alot

My daughters teacher advised her to slightly blow through the flute, practising the fingering before playing the sight reading piece.

She is also taking Grade 4 in July, pieces are Fudge Fandango and Siciliano, study no33 from 76 graded studies.

She wanted to take Grade 4 in March but teacher has made her wait, because she skipped grade 3.

A proper play through or try out of some parts is allowed and even encouraged.

When I did Guildhall Grade 7, I got told I couldn't play through/practise it!

or you can play through without blowing - you can still just about hear the tune in the clicky noise the keys make when you hit them down tongue.gif just a thought...

good luck with grade 4 smile.gif practise sightreading everything in sight, regardless of what standard it is (ok, so i'm probably the only nutter who'll tell you to sightread any standard unsure.gif ) and have a few run throughs of studies or something at/slightly above your level so you get used to different rhythms and stuff - i'm not saying learn anything extra perfectly and off-by-heart (though it's fun if you like!) but i've benifited a lot by just having 3/4 run throughs until i can play them roughly smile.gif it's good experience tongue.gif

If taking Associated Board exams, you are encouraged (see These Music Exams) to play parts of the sight reading. However, with Guildhall, as Nicki has said, you are not allowed to do this according to the exam regulations. Not sure of Trinity's regs, or how they are affected by the Trinity/Guildhall merger.
