Yes, Robert Lister used a machine that sprayed Carbolic acid over a surgery - this reduced infection and deaths later on. However, carbolic acid is nasty stuff, and made the skin crack, and the surgeons cough and splutter, which obviously isn't good....
The only thing I can't remember is the year!
