There's a whole range of things it could be - usually lack of support (breathing) and incorrect voice placing. I'd also say don't be too hard on yourself, lots of people think they sing out of tune but actually they don't. It depends what your comparing it against. I think I sing out of tune, but my teacher assures me I don't!

The fact that you can tell if you are out of tune is good - it shows you have a good ear.
David is right - there could be a number of reasons, most likely one or both of the ones he has mentioned. Trouble is, no-one can tell you without hearing you. Make sure you take the time to hear the note carefully in your head before you sing it.
I recommend lessons to learn support, breathing and placement. Yes, there is information available, but you need a second pair of ears to tell you if you are achieving it.
That's why Lesley Garrett, for instance, still has singing lessons. We all need that second pair of ears to make sure no bad habits are creeping in.
I still have regular lessons - I've so much still to learn!

I can't hear myself singing out of tune until I listen to a recording (unless its really badly out of tune). A previous teacher told me as a consequence that I had no "ear" for singing. IS this true or should I be able to detect any slight variation in tuning myself as I sing it?
