Started at the age of 11 and a half.

Now I have a Grade 8 pass (101 points lol), (does that mean I win?)

I'm going to try once more in June to get a distinction hopefully, at least a high merit!

Yes, I am a perfectionist.

I forgot to add something. I'm nearing 15.

(I forgot my password, so I'm using my mum's account =P )

Hi. I started playing the piano age 8 or something and Im only a grade 5 now (im 17) ....its shameful.

I cant see what the problem is.

I was 7 when i started and got to Grade 5 at 15,then stopped as the theory in thoes days was too hard.
22 years later ive started again ,using modern technology to help me study, take and pass exams.Im now teaching myself grade 6 piano.

When you see my previous exam results you only now realise its such a waste !

I think I started around 9, I'm now 17 and is currently in grade 9 at RCM level (so that's...maybe around grade 7 for ABRSM?). That's about one grade every year, give or take a couple. Although I'm still oh-so dreadful at sightreading...

Hey I just finished grade nine last spring. What are you working on? Maybe we did some of the same pieces?

i cant even remember how old i was wen i started playing... i cant ever remember not playing it...and yet now, at 16, iv jus taken grade 5 (and probably failed) altho piano became not my highest priority wen i started the trumpet at 4...and i also sing but i cant ever remember not being able to sing...so i cant compare tht with anything.

I started aged 4 or 5 and stopped for 1 year when I was 12 as my teacher was away.
Passed Grade 8 at 15.

There's nothing wrong with how old you started playing as long as you've already started.
Some people simply didn't get to start young due to various probs.......Remember, age is just a number(although it's obvious that it's easier to learn at younger age).

Started at age 6. Now, 30 years and 6 teachers later, still only grade 8.

Hey, I think I'm just gonna be stuck at grade 8 forever although I passed this grade 10 years after I started learning( more or less ).

hey i was kinda wierd....

....i started playing piano about 7 months ago now and im starting my grade 6 pieces next week!!!

im 15 btw

i took my first lesson and my teacher decided that i should start at grade 3...i just found it realy easy...anyway i had learned all my g3 pieces within 4 weeks and i had just missed an exam deadline so my teacher moved me on to grade 4 and when i learned all 3 g4 pieces in 6 weeks....i was moved on AGAIN!!!

i have been working on my grade 5 for a few months because of exams so i havent had alot of practice time but i passed it not long ago!!

so.....onto grade 6....maybe i can do 6 grades in a year!!! ohmy.gif

Here's a Big Round of Applause!!! ( Oh come on, you call this weird? This is unusual)

Spent 2 years learning up 2 grade 1 and then had a break from grades in middle as didnt like the pieces for that year but have generally done one grade every year. What pieces you doing for grade 5?

Hi katyt17,

I totally agree with everyone, that you should not feel bad about having Grade 5 when you started playing the piano aged 8. Grade 5 is really good! And everyone works at different levels. If this will make you feel any better, I'm 18 and I've only just taken my Grade 2 piano last month!! And I started having lessons when I was 15. That is very late! I had been playing a bit with my dad before that but he never taught me how to read music, so when the chance of having lessons came up I grabbed it!
I love playing, and no matter what your standard is I think you should play for your own enjoyment. I was very pleased with my Grade 2 distinction though (137! My dream...), as being as old as I am (!) I think I should have done that well.

theonlydru,

I was reading your posting about how you started off with Grade 3 pieces, but found them too easy and you've now taken grade 5. I was just wondering, how easy you found it to learn all the scales and aural for each grade???

Sorry, I don't play the piano but I'm going to say my age anyway! I started playing the treble recorder when I was 9/10 (I'd say 9 and a half), I'm 12 now and I'm doing GR5 at the moment!
Julie the flute girl :P
Started when I was 14 ... I've just sat grade 2 and I'm still 14 . So I've only been playing for a about 6 months or something like that smile.gif
