Hi,
This is pretty random, but is there a reason why so many singers also smoke? I know quite a few, just wondering if anyone has any ideas?
Thanks

No-one I know who is serious about their voice smokes. It's a really daft idea healthwise anyway, and it mucks up your vocal cords dreadfully.

I haven't particularly noticed that, but I agree with katyjay, it really isn't a great idea, for a whole host of reasons.

I'd noticed it too, I have to say. I can't understand it - same with nurses, supposedly helping people to get better but sort of contradicting themselves at the same time.

I have two smokers amongst my pupils and its not something I encourage, but what they do to their one bodies is up to them.
However as smoking really messes up the vocal folds it is not a good idea.
Its much better to be a non-smoking singer for the sake of your health and your voice.

If anyone comes to me for singing lessons and tells me they smoke, I tell them to forget learning to sing - what's the point? Another problem also occurs for people who sing and work in pubs or clubs which have a very smokey atmosphere.

This reminds me of a victory myself and a friend have just had at our rehearsals. In the singing group we have, there are 14 singers, of which 10 smoke, we've managed to get them - after 3 years! - to leave the room when smoking!
It was really becoming too much, having 10 hours of rehearsals a week.
