I had this problem and overcame it the cowards way ph34r.gif Just wrote down every term on a piece of papaer and panic learned just before the exam... laugh.gif I don't really think theres a way of learning them unsure.gif Maybe if you tried associating the Italian terms with similar words you know in English?
Good luck anyway! smile.gif

I memorised only one word. Cantabile - meaning in a singing style. Incredibly, it was the only word which came up in the exam smile.gif

To be honest, not many marks are awarded for knowing the terms. For the composition, prepare a few words which you could use for a happy/sad/fast/slow piece, but aside from that there are easier ways to pick up marks (not very useful, I know).

Erm...write them down with meanings lots of times smile.gif

Haiz? unsure.gif

Anyway, for the weird ones I just can't remember (especially German terms) for Grade VI, I think up little images.. the more ridiculous the better..

For example: bewegt.. I thought of slightly phonetically as "bed wet" ... and what would you do if you wet the bed? You would _move_ and this is the meaning. I also couldn't get over the fact that I thought "breit" meant "bright" which was wrong... I thought then of a huge massive Breitling watch which works cuz "breit" means "broad"...

Well, it worked for me... wink.gif

I made myself pairs of cards for each term, one for the foreign word and one for the English meaning, and played the game of matching them up, like the game of pelmanism. Like mrbouffant I also thought up some images for the odd ones to help me. I can still remember most of them nearly two years later.

Yes - i think that "odd images" things works very well. Like Mr B and Suepea I've used it in the past for memorising vocabulary - and it does stick.

I worked it out that there are around 180 foreign phrases to learn from grade 1 - 5!

Everyone learns best in different ways but the way I find works for me is constant repetition and word association. The way I did it was to tackle each grade at a time and then for each grade divide the word list into groups of 5 words. Learn the group of 5 and then only move on to the next group of 5 when you can remember the one you have just studied. The likelihood is that you are going to have to translate the foreign phrase into english so cover the english words up and try to translate the foreign words in the group of 5 first. Then try to do it the other way by covering the foreign words. Once you've learned all of the words in the grade pick them in a random order so you are not dependant on recalling them based on the order of the words!

Some words translate really obviously into english such as possibile and delicato. Other words can be distorted slightly to conjour up an image. For me "en dehors" conjours up an image of someone on a horse - they would be in a prominent place!

I'm afraid these things are very much like learning scale and argeggios in a practical exam - they shouldn't be left until a week before the exam!

Start by making sure you know all the things which you have seen on the music you are playing.
Anything else is a bonus.

Very true smile.gif I neglected to mention that though I'd learned all of them, the word that came up was something ridiculous like 'allegretto' ph34r.gif laugh.gif
