Wow. Makes my efforts look distinctly pallid!
But why did they dress the poor kid in that outfit? No wonder he looks a tad grumpy...

Is it me, or is it really really odd watching a young boy sing that aria??

That did strike me too. But still, wow, you can't fault his performance of it.

Sort of unexpected isnt it.
He is a bit sharp, but its quite effortless nevertheless. What do you reckon his top note is? It is very...welll....top

F

Is that the F that's one octave above the top line? Or are you joking?
It's possibly one of the F's

yes, isn't it?
Interesting comparison with Florence thingamyugit, the scary one, whose tops Fs would not so much shatter glass as make it wince.
And my guess: Very high

though I suspect Maggie's right.

Whilst wildly avoiding writing a phd chapter, I stuck my little chromatic thingummy next to the puter while he was singing - it's coming out as either an E or and F natural. So many leger lines, so little time...

I only listened very briefly (will go back) but I think it's the F two and a half octaves above middle C - in other words yes - an octave above the top line of the treble stave.
Just back from my concert - went ok.

Not wanting to rain on your ennui, or anything, Arran, but I think the top of the boy soprano range is usually the c or d 2 above middle c. This boy's voice is unusual. I think also more interesting is how effortlessly he's reaching those notes, not just that he's reaching them.

Yes, it's hardly a normal boy soprano range is it? Even a huge number of female sopranos couldn't get close to that.

and they're mostly in tune too. I've worked with a lot of boy sopranos (trebles) and known some very good ones - top F is not exactly run of the mill!

The aria is written up to a top F, and he sang it correctly. But I found it very strange watching a small boy sing it, it needs a lot more maturity and passion to sell it to an audience.
Yes, a very high range for a treble or a soprano. But just because you can reach those notes doesn't mean you should.

It's more of a stunt than music....

I cannot say that this is in any way a suitable song for a young boy to perforn. I find his vocal acrobatics quite skilled but not amazing. Young children can stretch their voices to reach some really high notes but this is not always good for their vocal chords. I would much prefer to hear him singing something more suitable for a young male.
