Full Version: Cornwall Summer Forums Concert!

Boo Radley
Apologies everyone, the original date we picked so perfectly has now been rendered impossible by my brother's decision to get married, highly inconsiderate I know! It will now no longer be a summer concert I'm afraid but we could simply postpone it a few months. The hire prices are relatively cheap down here so the venue hire should not be too much of a problem but.

Date: Late October to November

Location: Liskeard - A small market town about 20 miles into Cornwall, 10 miles from some lovely beaches. There is a lot of accomodation - hotels, B & Bs, campsites, etc - nearby so you could make a weekend break of it. I would be very happy to give you information on good local sights, beaches or whatever else takes your fancy.

Venue: Liskeard Public Hall, The Long Room - This is a small room which could comfortably seat about 35-50. It has a piano which is not in top nick but is in tune. Depending on the level of interest, we could use the larger hall which can seat up to 200, which has a grand piano. Of course a small gathering would look lost in this room so we will have to decide closer to the time. The hall hire fee is very minimal (for the smaller room) and could easily be covered by just a £1 or £2 entrance fee. If we used the larger hall, this would have to be increased.

If you have any queries or suggestions please just ask.

I would love to make an 'interested' list for those who like the idea and fancy a break combined with a forum concert. If you realistically think that you might be able to make it then please do tell me when from late October to November you could make it, we could make this really good fun if we had a good number of forum members turn up! smile.gif

I know I've left an 'interested' message in your other thread, but I thought I'd leave another 'interested' message here too! If it moves off of the weekend you've put on the message above though, I'd be stuck.

So I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I'll see whether I can persuade my parents to book a holiday in Cornwall. I'd like to come, but unsure whether I can smile.gif

ooopps!!

Aug 19th I am away with my string quartet and Aug 20th is my Wedding Anniversary. Soz!!!
katyjay
My wedding anniversary weekend too. Would have to see if Him Indoors is prepared to put up with a music weekend then.

Argh no this is what I was afraid of. We might have to move it to September if that's more convenient for the majority. How is everyone for September, which weekends would you not be able to come?

Forum concert at Woodford Green on 23rd September. Not sure about other weekends until I check with the other half.
janexxx
You'll never be able to please everybody Boo, and holiday season will always be more difficult. Best to make a decision, check you have a quorum, and then go for it!
jo.clarinet
PLEASE don't arrange for it to be too close to the date of the Woodford concert (23rd Sept) ph34r.gif ! You might not have to pay much for the hire of your hall, but I will have to pay at least £300 for the 8-hour hire of our premises, which have already been booked for that day.

If lots of people go to yours and it is, say, the week before mine, they might well not want to go to another one so soon and so would not come to Woodford. Last year I only JUST broke even on the hire fee with the income from performers and audience, and bore all the other costs (refreshments etc.) myself. I really can't afford for people not to want to come to the one this September! unsure.gif

Boo

I think the best thing would be for you to stick to your original date of 19th August, if you are going to do it this year.

Jo's right that we don't want to spoil the uptake for her concert - these big forums events take a lot of personal investment long before one opens for bookings, and it wouldn't be fair to her if your event disrupted hers.

I know, that's the last thing I would want to do, but it seems such a shame that you and Jane won't be able to come. sad.gif I could always an early autumn break concert in early October as well. Ok, to play it safe I'll stick to the date of the 19/20th though, but only if enough interest is shown.

Hope all goes well with your concert Jo, sounds like you've got more organisation on your hands than me. smile.gif

Much as we like to think it does, I'm sure the world does not revolve around KJ and me wink.gif . I'm sorry I can't be there, but maybe next year we can do a whole week if we get organised soon enough!! look on this as a pilot event smile.gif
jo.clarinet
Thanks for being understanding, Boo! smile.gif
I wish you all the very best for your venture, although it's unlikely that I'll be able to come myself.
Car Expert
I won't be able to make it because I'll be coming back from the Isle of Wight on the 19th or the 20th (can't remember which day).

Yep, im interested - i'll have to check dates- but sounds good!
Oddball
Sounds good to me - Jon we can probably get the train, I'll look at connections...

It would be best to stick in the summer holiday for the moment..
barry-clari
See how it goes Boo.

If this year doesn't work out, you could always plan for a larger scale event at the end of August '07. If you pick the Bank Holiday weekend that year, you may well get a good response, as less people are likely to be working (although it's also a favourite weekend for bandstand concerts!)

If the response is good this year (20 plus definites, say), then why not, as has been said above, do a pilot run this year, then start planning a bigger 'do' for 2007, maybe with a couple of concerts, plus maybe the odd added excursion to interesting places? If a goodly amount of interest is shown, I'd be more than happy to help out with what I can for that, as long as I'm around (I haven't started planning my '07 activities yet!)

Sincere apologies everyone, my brother has just decided he is going to get married on the 19th of August in Coventry. mad.gif How typical is that?! I'm afraid we are going to have to postpone it, either until late October or November. Advantages are that this will give us more time to sort things out, (maybe somewhere slightly more glamorous) and there should be less trouble booking up after the summer is over. But how many of you guys would be up for a Forums Winter Concert? unsure.gif

That's OK don't worry smile.gif

The advantage of course of picking October, or indeed August '07, is, as you say, having a lot longer to plan something really good! The weekend of 28th/29th October is around half term in many areas of the UK, maybe that's a possibility.

Suits me, I should be able to come after all then!!!

Seems like the weekend of 19th / 20th August is popular one for weddings, your bro. Katyjay, me, and Jack and Vera Duckworth! laugh.gif

Suits me! smile.gif

I have a feeling the Leicestershire half term won't be when everyone elses is. It is always different rolleyes.gif

Let me know as soon as you find out your half-term, then we can start looking at potential dates. It doesn't have to be on half-term week, but if it is we wouldn't have to have it on a weekend maybe. We'll see anyway.

Yay, it gets rid of Cliff Richard, it was worth changing the date just for that! laugh.gif

Same as before for me and October.....Love to be involved but have to see the rota. Advantage is, with it not being the first weeks of a new job, gives me chance to switch. Weekend *much* better than weekdays though!

Short-sighted of your brother, Boo - does he not know July 15th is *the* day for weddings this year?!!

I know, I can just see it raining all summer now and being baking hot in November! tongue.gif

The weather is very beautiful in Essex today but it will not cheer me up. sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif VN's dad has said she may not go to Cornwall or Leicester! It's too far, he claims, for a little child! He'll let us spend all day at the Woodford Green's ABRSM concert instead but that's a year away!

Aw, tell him my little sisters are always travelling up to London and they cope fine. A few audio books make the journey fly by (my little sisters even enjoyed Great Expectations last time smile.gif ).
Boo Radley
So does anyone have any dates that they might be able to make in late October to November? The options are still pretty much open for now so let me know which weekend you are (or aren't) free, then we can narrow it down a bit. smile.gif

That is a shame sad.gif Are you sure there is nothing to persuade him. It would not take too long if you came on the train....

Is the concert open to teachers, too?

Any weekend -but normally only Sundays as I'm teaching every Saturday. October is grade exam time, so I couldn't cancel lessons before the exams. I'm away 16th to 28th November on holiday. Apart from that, count me in!
Quite happy to leave early Sunday morning - or do you plan a Saturday evening concert? If so, I could shift the lessons to earlier to the day.

We were going to have it on a Saturday, Sunday is definitely not good for me. We could consider having it in the late afternoon or evening, would it be feasible to postpone the lessons for one week if this is not practical for everyone else?

Just checked the exam dates - they are 6th Nov to 9th Dec. In practice, we usually get near the end of the session. As I'm away in November, I don't think the candidates would love me if I cancelled another Saturdays lessons as well. But I would only need to rearrange those who were taking exams. In which case, probably October is better. But you know how it is, there's never a perfect time, so if you want to do something bad enough, you work around it!
See what's good for everyone else, and I'll do my best.
