Full Version: Advice For Aspiring String Player....!

Hiya everyone

- been told to try this question on Viva Strings, so here goes....been playing clarinet for about three months now and I'd like to try a second instrument - I thought a stringed/brass instrument might be useful for developing my 'ear' (I chose woodwind because I'm musical igmoramus and at least with woodwind you can just about hit the right note by covering the right holes and there isn't too much tuning involved!). Have been advised against brass as it may ruin my embouchure, especially at this early stage - what do people think about violins/violas? I can't afford a cello or bass, or fit them into my flat!

I can't afford lessons at first so I would just be playing around with opens notes and practising posture etc. (My clarinet teacher is a pretty wide ranging musician so I'm sure he can give me some tips) - for that reason I thought I might just invest in a cheapy internet bought instrument and perhaps upgrading the strings... any suggestions for internet sites?

Thanks!

Does your clarinet teacher actually play the violin or have real experience with teaching a stringed instrument? While I don't wish to disuade you from taking advice, the wrong advice is worse than no advice at all. There are lots of teaching DVDs out there showing the basics, so this might be an option initially.
