Depends what one you mean. The Op.27 is at absolute minimum DipABRSM along with it's D flat counterpart. The Posthumous one is about Grade 7/8
chopet
Ya, if its the posthumous one, ie. the one from the film 'the pianist', that ones grade 8. I remember doing it for my grade 8 a few years ago....
Oddball
Really? Damn.....

Didn't think it was that kind of standard.... blink.gif

Don't forget you can have plenty of rubato in Chopin Nocturnes!!!
Oddball
How long have I got to do that 35ths scale? In minutes, we're talking wink.gif

My teacher's got the book with the music from the film 'The Pianist' & she's going to lend it to me. I love Nocturne in C# minor - what's it like to play? Is it difficult?

Oddball
The first page isn't bad, nor's the second, but as usual the third and final one is the killer. IMHO.

Wow, I didnt realize it was such a high standard!!!!!!!! blink.gif its great to play, and i didnt find it too difficult!! blink.gif smile.gif
Oddball
Nor me ph34r.gif

I third it ph34r.gif

Though...all nocturnes by Chopin should be regarded as hard, due to the expressive qualities needed

If anyones interested, I just found this video of Wladyslaw Szpilman (the pianist who the film 'the pianist' was about)playing this piece on youtube .
Here it is.....

What about Nocturne in Eb?
Oddball
I think that one's really hard.... sad.gif
sarah-flute
Is the Eb one the one that's really well known? If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's really beautiful, but to my uneducated ear sounds like it'd be HARD!
StuMac
I think the E flat (op 9 no 2) it's a good grade 8 at least! Jeane (is that how it's spelled) played it realy nicely at Egham.

My teacher recons the C# minor is the easiest nocturne and thinks it's grade 6 / 7.

The other relatively easy one is the Lento in G minor, which is also one of my favorites. Fingering is a bit tricky, but you can take it really slowly and give youself time to get it right. It's been used as a grade 7 piece I think.
crazy_purple_piano_freak
Yes it is op.9 no.2 that I was talking about smile.gif I had learnt the first page for a concert before we found out someone else was playing it so I stopped and learnt this Tchaikovsky piece instead...The last page looks tricky..,. ph34r.gif

Does anyone know which edition he is plaing by the way? Seems to be slightly different to my one.
Oddball
I noticed that too, on the F# to G# trill, he puts an E in beforehand, and a few other different notes here and there...
Noodelz
I think he might have added himself. Chopin was dead when this was published anyway so he couldn't have changed anything.
tiger_vio
how about the nocturne op.9 no.2 (e flat) I did it quite a while ago, never knew what grade it was.
crazy_purple_piano_freak
Tiger Vio look earlier in the thread! tongue.gif

I love that piece too!
Oddball
Just a quick question for players of the piece: What fingering do you use for The Eb / E natrual trills? I use 1 & 2, but others I know play it 2 & 3..... what do you do?
Noodelz
I use 2 + 3.
Oddball
Why did I say 1 + 2? I meant 1 + 3...
melody_maker
I use 2+3 smile.gif my piano teacher uses 1 and 3 for his trills too!
sarah-flute
Speaking as a total non-expert, I think I sometimes use one, sometimes the other, but I think 1-3 is actually easier even though it seems weird. But not in Chopin: I can't even play Chopin, let alone use trills in it laugh.gif
crazy_purple_piano_freak
I think I've always used 2 and 3
