Heya.
JUst wondering if it was actually possible to shatter glass or any other material for that mater just by singing high notes.
Thanks.

Yes, it is possible and not too difficult! Choose a thin glass, alas these are also the most expensive ones, and find out at what pitch it will "ping". Do this by tapping it gently with a teaspoon. Then sing a sustained note at the poor thing, at the same pitch but with a fairly heavy vibrato so as to be constantly moving off back to the note. If you can produce enough volume the glass will break. TWO THINGS: Wear eye procectors cool.gif and get the moment on film. ohmy.gif And , yes I can do it! It was my party trick at a famous party in 1977 in Abergavenny that was held in a cellar. On that occasion some one ( not me) beheaded a stuffed pheasant with a repro sword. Both were part of the decor in the aforementioned cellar. It was stuck back with lots of stickytape and the owner didn't notice for several weeks! We had good parties in the old days! biggrin.gif

The best I did was make all the glasses vibrate in my parents sideboard. At which point I realised their dining room maybe not the best place to practice.

It's fascinating to watch the glass using high-speed film played back in slow motion: the glass actually starts to wobble to and fro like a pane of jelly before finally shattering. Using powerful speakers (capable of bursting eardrums, used only in sound-proof labs) it can be done to thick glasses, which really undulate impressively smile.gif.

Oooh that sounds quite cool, are there any films of it available online do you think?

I thought it was rather amusing. Phantom of the Opera sung quite badly though...
