For the next two weeks, I will be on Work Experience. During the two weeks, I will post a report everyday in this thread to show what I did, so you know how I'm getting on. This is my job description:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the first day, I've got an induction day, so I have to come in at 10am - one hour later than usual. Also, I've got a piano practical exam on the 17th (Friday), so I will have to take the afternoon off. Luckily, travel is easy, because I only need to get one bus, which takes me from my local high road, to the end of the road to where I work, which is handy.

I'll also be working with one of my friends from my year group, so that will be good!

If anyone has any last minute advice I can give me (yes I saw your reply in CPPF's work experience thread anakrron smile.gif ), then that would be greatly appreciated.

Wish me luck please! smile.gif

Hope it was good.

I loved my work experience. One of my days was my birthday and they got me a card, and then at the end they gave me some vouchers and a lovely card. I sometimes text the person I worked with, but I don't often hear back. I really enjoyed it though.

Good luck, CE! Make sure you're in time for your lesson on Tuesday, as it's the last one before your exam! tongue.gif

Hope you have fun!

I hated my work experience, was a waste of 2 weeks! One of my days was my birthday, like Nicki's, except on that day there was a fallen tree on the railway line so I had to walk to school, none of the receptionnists would let me use their phones, and my career's teacher ended up taking me through and then another random teacher picking me up later! And because of the stupid trains, I ended up walking from home to the station (2 miles), station to school, (1 mile), then aother mile and a half home after my teacher brought me back! Not impressed....

REPORT: Monday 13th March 2006

In the morning, I had my induction. During that time, I watched a video about how the company makes the bread. Then, I was able to see it happen in real life. This meant wearing a hairnet, earpieces and a high visibility jacket. I found it very interesting how it started from a dough to when it got shaped, cooked, cooled down and packaged. I was also shown around the rest of the site.

In the afternoon, I did some filing. This meant sorting out last week's invoices and putting them in the right section for each day (each section was numbered e.g. 601, 602, 665). This was boring, but at least I was able to do it. The people who were in the same room as me were 'crazy', but looked after me well and made me laugh.

I also found out that you can get a loaf of bread in the supermarket for £0.90-£1.00, but if I buy it from the staff shop, I could get a loaf of Kingsmill bread for 15p! What a bargain! cool.gif

I have got my timetable so I know what I will be doing each day. I will post that later.

So far so good! biggrin.gif

Sounds interesting! When I went on mine (I did mine at a hospital), I had a ridiculous amount of filing to do too. Paperwork is just part of life, I guess. wink.gif

Having worked in a hospital there is always a ridiculous amount of filing to do. Don't knock medical records workers, without them hospitals would grind to a halt.

Where's the bakery CE, if I may be so bold? I'm just wondering if I ever went there in my "making things" career...

Ask them what SCADA and PLC system they use to control the process, and whether it interfaces nicely with their ERP layer.. They'll love a question like that smile.gif

Hmmm, shame they haven't included marketing. It would be nice if you could go on a shoot for a commercial. Picture this - close up on a slice of bread being buttered with a silver butterknife. Delicate slices of cucumber being delicately laid in an attractive pattern over the bread's deep luxurious whiteness. Le Onde playing in the background. The camera pulls back gradually to reveal Car Expert on a gorgeous palm-fringed beach, respendent in his speedos, putting the finishing touches to the sandwich he is making, and cutting it into lush triangles. He is obviously at ease with his body, and one can tell from his sophisticated yet easy manner that this is a man who is used to making sandwiches. Camera closes up on the lips of the beautiful girl he is with on the beach, her skin honeyed by the sun, her eyes sparkling and her lips parted in anticipation of the tasty morsel that is soon to pass between them. As the music builds to a climax, we see Car's teasing, smiling eyes as he lovingly feeds the sandwich to her. Voice Over: KINGSMILL. THE BREAD FOR CAR EXPERTS EVERYWHERE. WHEN ONLY THE BEST WILL DO.

But no, fraid not. Instead you'll be going to Customer Ops, Wages and Garage Admin. laugh.gif

Sounds like you're having an interesting time, Car Expert!

Airman's school has developed such a rough reputation over the past year that thre was a flurry of places canceling their offers to host work experience kids this year laugh.gif .

Finally Airman went for HALF A DAY to the city library, where the little old librarians had him racing round for hours reaching things off high shelves for them. He did get to learn how to use a microfiche...a good, solid, retro skill that one!

His school did itself proud in the career guidance meeting for parents too - we got a 30 minute lecture on not allowing our kids to become NEETs (Not in Employment, Education, and Training), but since they didn't get around to mentioning even ONE other alternative to being a NEET, I guess that's 169 kids headed for NEETdom!

In the morning, I was in Health & Safety. I had to put some photos of first aiders and fire marshalls on the computer, print them out and put them on the noticeboard in the corridor.

In the afternoon, I was in Human Resources, and I was told how that particular department works. I was then given some information in writing, and some case studies to solve. Then I had to sort out the folders in the drawers! rolleyes.gif

I was in the management accounts department today. My task of the day was to put these old accounts (6 or 7 pages of them) on a form on the computer, print them out and cancel them. The dates ranged from August 2002 to January 2006. It was quite easy to do, and I nearly got them all done - I finished for the day with 16 more still to do. The people who I was working with said it was a great help and they have saved a lot of time.

Today, I was in the Engineering Admin department, which is where the spares get ordered. I was shown how to order the spares, and also I had to unwrap the parts that got delivered and put them away in the store. It was boring at times because the man was on the phone 90% of the time.

In the afternoon, I was taken into the bread factory, where I had to weigh some loaves of bread. For them to go through, they have to be over 810g. If they're not, they just get thrown away.
