Full Version: When Someone Winks...

Thanks to Chris who asked, "When someone asks "Would you like to go for a coffee?" what do YOU think they mean?" I remember something that puzzled me for a while but it never occurred to me to ask HERE! biggrin.gif

When a male friend smiles and winks at you (I'm female, of course, couple of times just before bidding me goodbye) what can he possibly mean? I thought it was pretty harmless and laughed it off until my hubby treated it otherwise. He didn't think it was funny at all. Am I naive or is he over-reacting? Mentioned this to a friend once and she's in her 50s and she advised that husbands are like that, they get jealous over nothing! laugh.gif

What are YOU thinking of, fellas, whenever you smile and wink? tongue.gif

Sometimes a wink is just a wink! biggrin.gif

Good! Someone I've met and feel is sensible sensibly agrees with me. smile.gif

Yes, sometimes a wink is just a wink.
It may be a non verbal way to share a private joke too.
And all husbands are not like that...I think mine would find it amusing if someone was flirting with me in a friendly way, that's if he noticed something as subtle as a wink .

A wink is a wink..... unless it is a twitch? unsure.gif laugh.gif

As with all these questions, it depends on the context.

Indeed it does!

Context. Good point! Yes, it happened quite a few times by different persons. Once a long time ago, a very good friend/my boss had just shared a sarcastic veiled party-laugh kind of remark about his boss whom we both can't stand but no one else knows this and another time, it was when a friend had just handed me (before parting) a CD full of love songs! But I didn't know they were all passionate love songs! laugh.gif So it was a bit naughty of him then but that was a long time ago. biggrin.gif

True story!

Many years ago when I was in my early twenties. I was working in London and took the underground every day.
I hated my glasses and decided to try soft contact lenses. In those days, they were thicker and took a lot more getting used to.

So there am I, on the train. closing one eye, then the other, focusing on passengers, blinking to my heart's content.

We stop, and an elderly lady goes past and throws a styrofoam cup at me, shouting obscenities.

Poor old me, a gentleman to the core, simply sits and wonders what on earth is happening.

Then it dawned on me. I'd been focusing on her and winking like mad!

I was a lot more careful after that! cool.gif

Poor, poor you! I must admit I did have one winking experience that wasn't totally innocent! A colleague who used to wink at me at my office asked me out whilst giving me a lift home one evening. I showed him my ring and told him that I was engaged. To my surprise, he wasn't put off and replied, "So what? You can be disengaged." He persisted. In the end I realised it wasn't just a naughty wink for the fun of it. I avoided him as much as I possibly could. I was SO scared because I was young then (he was already 40!) and it was my first job in UK and also my fiance was away long-term. Didn't tell him that he was away for work of course but he must have guessed. Steven, you shouldn't have focussed on ONE person, for goodness sake! biggrin.gif
