is it true that music and maths are connected? is everyone who is musical also mathmatical? is everyone who is mathmatical potentially musical?

share the knowledge biggrin.gif and your opinions

Mmm what an interesting one. I get back to you. Its a little late wink.gif

Music and maths MUST be connected. I say that with absolute certainty because since I started studying music theory i have done so much more counting on my fingers (eg 1, 2, 3, 4 ..... perfect 5th). laugh.gif

as to whether I am any good at either ...... well we'll see once I do grade 5 theory in June.

I'm doing a higher paper and you need 95% to get an A*!

Yikes! I got an A* in maths when I was at school but doubt very much whether I got in excess of 90% (or even 80, come to that!). Not sure what the boundary was...

I know a lot of musical people who are exceptionally good at maths.

I love you MWL!

Mathematical people are "musical" in that they seem more readily able to turn what's on the page into sound - they get the intervals, timing, etc, correct quicker than a non-mathematical person, and their physical co-ordinationation may be better. HOWEVER, there is more to music than a logical tranference of symbols to sounds, and true musicality requires a lot more than the understanding of technicalities. My best pupils (as in, the ones who willingly to practise most, and who perform best in festivals/concerts) are not necessarilly good at maths - and their sight-reading is not always good; but they have that certain indefineable "something extra"; they may have to work harder at learning the notes and getting the timing right, but you know that when it's perfected, it will be captivating. For me, music is communication - much more than it is notes and timing (although that's understood) - and to be truly musical means having the inate creative and communicative abily to hold the attention of a wavering audience.
