Hi, i took my grade 4 about an hour ago, my pieces and aural where fine, sight reading probaly ok and my scales where completly dreadful (Lets just say i got 2 scales correct, 1 arppegio and the 3 wrong). I had prepared for my scales but nervs got the better of me. Do examiners take nervs into consideration or not ? Also will messing up my scales result in me failing?
Thanks
Jess

They understand about nerves but can only really mark what they hear. They can usually tell the difference between not prpeapred and messed up because of nerves because they are experience people.
Whether messing up the scales will lead to a fail depends on how near to a bare pass your other marks are.
Good luck, and remember you can't do better than your best on the day.

Remember that scales are only worth 21 out of 150, so they shouldn't drastically affect your result. I think you get 7 out of 21 for at least attempting them anyway. smile.gif

They understand that nerves can get the better of you, but think, they want most people to pass, if your pieces were fine I think you'll pass, don't worry about it too much, you might even get a merit!

Definitely - for my grade 4 about 18 months ago, I had to restart several scales and still fluffed a few notes, but because the examiner could see that I was really well prepared - I responded promptly (didn't have to stand there going "um, now, D major...", and played them at a good speed" - and messed up due to nerves, I still only dropped 2 marks. It's impossible to say without having heard them what you will have got, but don't panic! It's only one section of the exam and you are unlikely to have done as badly as you think you did, you get 7 marks just for attempting them, so if your pieces (the main bit) were OK the other bits were OK, then it's unlikely that *just* your scales will have meant you failed smile.gif

You can't do anything about it now anyway, except to know that your scales were shaky under exam conditions (so prepare them even better next time!) - so, though I know it isn't easy to do, try and forget about it and don't worry, because it will only stress you out and can't change the result smile.gif

This was quite a while ago now, any sign of a result yet smile.gif?

I did my Grade 4 exam in March as well and i totally mucked up my minor scales and my arpeggios were hesitant in delivery according to my examiner. I failed the scales by one mark but still passed the exam. Aslong as you have done reasonably well in the rest of the exam you will definetly pass. Good Luck!
