My aspect on exams is that there is no such thing as a bad pass! Anything above 100 is fantastic! I always hear people saying "oh i only got a merit" but my friend has always spent more than 6 months preparing for her piano exams, plays like an angel, has the entire music dictionary inside her head and puts more felling and character into her pieces than anything i have ever heard yet the highest she has ever 'scored' in her exam is 112, and to me and her other friends and family, she is brilliant so obviously 112 is also brilliant!
Besides, who cares about what you get in exams, if you fail you try again, if you pass, you be proud that you passed!
Then again, it has always been difficult for my cousin, who used to do exams with me as she used to get results in her 10's and i used to get them in the 30's and 40's! So judged against others, results can be bad, but examiners rarely give full marks in everything do they?
If i walked out of my salle du musique with 100 i would still yell with joy and run around in the garden, and probably jump in next door's pool as usual. I couldn't care less if my certificate said merit or distinction because at the end of the day, i only focus on the pass!
You know inside your strengths and weaknesses in your instrument, you know what you can improve and couldn't improve any more
you know some examiners are tight so flaunt what you have!

P.S. My highest is 149 for clarinet grade 5, something i am proud of for eternity! I don't think i could get aqny higher than that now! My guitar teacher said that woudl eb full marks because examiners like to knock a mark off just for the sake of it
