Hi,
For practical, has anyone ever skipped grade 1 to grade 6 for a certain instrument but straight away sit for grade 7 or grade 8 for that same instrument?
Can anyone who does it share the experience here? I was wondering if it is possible to do so. And please tell me the instrument on which you did this.
Thank you.

I might be doing this. I don't like taking exams, (but i have done grade 1,2 and 4) I will probably just go in for grade 8 before i go to university. But i do prepare, do the scales etc, i just dont take the actual exam. I don't see how people need to see me pass an exam just to say i have improved. I play the flute by the way.

Yes, I went straight to Grade 8 bassoon which I took in June 1997.
It was fine though as up to that point I had taken 5 piano exams (to Grade 5), 3 violin exams (to Grade 6), 2 flute exams (to Grade 4) and 2 theory so the whole exam experience wasn't new at all.
I also took my Grade 8 bassoon the day after my A-Level music performance exam. Sounds like a nightmare, I know, but actually was OK as I played the same pieces.

i think that when you edit a post it goes away then comes back after its been moderated!
as i said before it is possible but to do grade 6 or above practical you need grade 5 theory

My husband only ever took Grade 8s (piano, organ, cello, theory) so, yes, it can be done!

YES! I was doing my grade 8 on Recorder without any exam before.
My friend also finished his grade 8 on Violin only with the Grade 5 Theory.

Yes it is possible as long as you can play to the standard of the exam you are taking. There's no requirements for you to have grade 6 before you take grade 7 etc. And you'd need grade 5 theory of course.
What instrument are you thinking of doing it on?

Maybe i'll 'try' on violin. I'm so lack of time to do exam, so i want to rush. By the way, i've taken grade 5 theory. But i did do piano 9 piano practical exams before.

I have often skipped exams, normally because my Mum or my teacher didn't think there was much point in doing them. For instance I got a saxophone over the summer holiday last year for my birthday and as I already play a number of woodwind instruments I went straight from to grade three in less than a term. So it is possible and saves money!

possible I know a few people who have done it. I did my grade 7 sax after playing it for a few months but i have played the clarinet for ages so it wasnt too much of a change.

yes, it's possible. For the grades exams, I've only done 4, 7, and 8. With the exception of the prerequisite for Grade 5 Theory before you proceed to practical exams 6-8, all you really need to do is play to the standard of those higher grades, and with perfect practice (practice doesn't make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect) and diligence while going through those long hours, you'll probably be able to skip your way up.
oh, and for piano is what I obtained those grades in.

I've taken grade 1 - 5 flute and am now skipping to grade 8 in december
My other exams havent been skipped , I've worked my way up
