at my grans last night i found a Naxos release of Rachmaninovs second and third piano concertos.
The big thing is, the piano solo was played by rachmaninov himself! wow! i think it was recorded in 1939 and 1940 respectively.

Well said.
R's own recordings have a particular and distinct authentiticity not audible elsewhere.
They are somewhat "cool" but very educational to listen to.

I just noticed. I compared the third concerto to another recording i have of it, conducted by Alexander Titov, and piano solo Alexei Orlovetsky.
The one with rachmaninov as piano solo, lasts roughly 34 mins, whereas the other one lasts nearly 45 mins!!!!!
