Full Version: Recommendations For Duets (sop, Alto)

Hi,

I'm getting together with a friend of mine who's a semi-professional jazz/blues singer, and we'd like to sing some duets together. Obviously with my classical training, we could be different planets so far as our musical repertoires are concerned.

Has anyone any suggestions for songs that we could try? I got as far as thinking of the Simon and Garfunkel version of Scarborough Fair, and I have a CD of the traditional song version so I can check to see if it's similar enough.

I had a look at musicroom.com to see if they just happened to have a compilation of duets (with CD accomp) but there didn't seem to be anything suitable.

Does anyone know of a good book, or can make any recommendations for us to try. I'm happy to try "Julie's world", ie. blues/jazz but it seems to be the case that it's always too low. But we must be able to meet somewhere in the middle surely?

Any thoughts most gratefully received. Thank you.

I think that you could have fun with the Rossini cats' duet. Keep to your own styles and act out a "battle" between classical and jazz styles. Imagine he amusement if you were to oerform it in a concert with you wearing full evening dress and your jazzy friend wearing a verysexy jazz style outfit. But on a more serious note there is a nice arrangement of Malotti's Lord's Prayer that could work well.

I don't have any recommendations, but oh, that sounds like it could be a lot of fun!

I like Petrat's idea for the Rossini... biggrin.gif

The "Cats" sounds fun, thanks for that suggestion Petrat. I shall talk to Julie about it and see what she says.

Thanks

I love the cats' duet. Wicked.

No suggestions - I'll get my coat.

Hi Amber,

There was a request for sop/alto duets around last summer in the Viva Voice section, and a reasonable number of replies. I'll see if I can find the link...try this...

As usual I was plugging my favourite folk duet song book in that topic. If you don't want to do the Cats (which I must admit is great fun, as you know), you could well find something suitable in there.

Good luck...
