In view of the various suggestions to have a separate discussion list for Adult Beginners - - a very active thread started by Silver Pianist - -I though it might be worth doing a head count to provide some evidence of potential interest in such a list.

Counting by age group is one way of doing it. (It's anonymous anyway!)

Great idea!

Thanks Cressida

(I wonder what our final head count will be!)

Well done Cressida. I really hope we are able to persuade "the powers that be" to grant a separate discussion list for Adult Beginners. In the short time I have been dipping into this thread I have so much to thank you all for. I've discovered reading material I would never have known about, learned about musical websites that enable me to listen online, and most of all I believe I have gained confidence now that I have chance to talk to others who know what it's like to be an adult beginner and are willing to share their experience.
I hope more of us will voice our support for the proposal and enter into the fun of the poll.
From one who will shortly be celebrating her 60th birthday listening to Grieg's Lyric Pieces at a concert in Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg's home in Bergen. Did anyone else play Grieg's Arietta for their Grade 4? I still love it.................

I think it's an excellent idea, too!

You lucky thing. smile.gif

Who is the pianist? I've got the recording of Leif Ove Andsnes performing the Lyric pieces at Troldhaugen.

'Powers that be' - are you listening??

Without wishing to sound too sycophantic rolleyes.gif ....I have to say that I think it very forward-thinking of ABRSM to provide the forums (fora?) for discussion about issues related to the learning and teaching of music, and clearly very much appreciated by all contributors. Very well -managed too. Thank you!

...But please can we have an adult beginners forum? Well - at least give it a try, and pull it if there are no/few takers or it doesn't 'work' (?)

CMORRIS
Dear All,

Thank you for your many requests to set up new instrument forums. It's great to see that the forums are so popular. We are currently trying to decide how we best go about expanding the forums, however we do have some technical issues to sort out first - just so that we can be sure that the already existing forums and rest of the website will continue running smoothly.

The forums take up a lot of server capacity, bandwidth and so these (and other technical issues - far to dull to go into here - have to be seen to first)

Please be patient with us - we are working very hard behind the scenes to give you what you want and I will keep you posted of any new developments right here on the forums.

Best regards

Hi Lucia
I don't know who is performing the Grieg Lyric Pieces. We are only in Bergen for two days and I mentioned to the tour organiser how much I would love to go to Troldhaugen whilst we are there and she has arranged everything as a special treat. I thought it was such a coincidence when I heard the programme included Arietta, as I played it last year for Grade 4. I still love it and have been working it up again just in case I get the opportunity to play it whilst we are travelling around Norway. rolleyes.gif
The recording I have is of Emil Gilels who I believe has performed them at Troldhaugen. The first track is of the Arietta and the last track is called "Remembrances" from Book 10 Opus 71 no 7. It is in fact the Arietta played in waltz time, quite different, with changes of tonality, but equally beautiful.
I shall tell you all about it upon my return.

I didn't play that: but I will be playing Watchman's Song for grade 4 this year.

Leif Ove Andsnes is brilliant; he plays Grieg brilliantly, he seems to have got the reputation for that being Norwegian, but he's incredibly versatile and plays so many other things so well too!

I did. I began playing the piano at age 93. That was 2 years ago. I want to take my grade 3 soon. Not bad for a 95 year old eh?
