Hey!
Does anyone know anything at all about the context around Telemanns 12 fantasias for flute. i know that they were originally composed for recorder, and i'm fine with analysing it. i just need to know what they were composed for? Thanks - sera

Haven't you answered your own question here? Recorder. smile.gif Actually, my edition of these pieces says that it is the recorder player who has nicked the flute music, again... blink.gif My book says that the recorder edition was produced from a research publication of Telemann's chamber works without bass, and that, as was conventional in Telemann's day, most of the pieces had to be transposed up a minor third to fit the treble recorder, except for three, which were put up a fourth. I don't know if the Fantasias were published originally in the magazine called "Der Getreue Musikmeister" - a publication which allowed people to get ready access to new music from which to learn.

My understanding is that Telemann composed the fantasias with the amateur instrumentalist in mind - challenging but not out of the reach of Mr/Ms Average. I think they were designed as technical exercises. I don't think they were published in his magazine - I think there he used to publish half a sonata each edition so the reader had to keep buying the publication to get the full set! Pretty shrewd business thinking!
