For those pianists who use technical exercises as part of their practice, I am interested to know which ones you like to use and why. Also, are there some that you have tried and do not like and why?

I have used Hanon, Beringer, Tankard and also Tone, Touch and Technique by Max Cooke as well as making up some of my own.

What specific areas of your playing do use them for?

I have used Czerny op.740 and Clementi Dr Gradus. The former is more technical while the latter are more like pieces. I am using them to work at the moment on octave technique, keeping 5th finger curved and for general warm-up. Have also tackled a couple of Chopin Etudes, they are more exciting to play as concert pieces.
