I posted this in the adult learners forum and it was suggested I mention here too as it's more on-topic.

--------

My singing voice is literally awful. I feel embarassed doing the echo singing parts of piano exams, singing along to the radio or even humming. I'd like to be able to hit some notes and feel more confident. I don't want to go for grading or take up singing as a proper study - just have the confidence to open my mouth and not cringe at the horrible fingernails on blackboard noise I produce.

From what I've heard, it's possible with training to get to a fairly acceptable level of vocal skill. This is all I want, not to have people not throw themselves off the nearest bridge rather than listen to me!

I belive I need a teacher. Can anybody suggest a place to start, or even inspire me to give it a go? I live in Bucks, willing to travel and would just want enough help to get me on my way. As much as I adore singers, all I need is enough skill to scrape through and I'll leave the real singing to the pros.

All suggestions welcome..!

Hi Tom

Just one query - do you belong to a choir at all? Choirs are a good way of getting involved with singing without going to the full commitment of having lessons.

Because you are with a group of people, your voice isn't so conspicuous, and you get used to making it hit the right note - not to mention really improving your sight-reading.

A good place to look for a choir is the British Choirs on the Net website - www.choirs.org.uk

Cheers
