Nocturne
Hi all,

I've been messing around with my flute for the last couple of weeks. Last weekend I got a book from the library with a CD, and I noticed that I play 1/2(!) tone flat (for example, I get G# when I try to play A). I adjusted the tuning cork to the right position, but it didn't seem to help. I realize it is hard to give advice without hearing/seeing it, but I still want to know is someone can help me with two questions I have:

1. Is it possible that the flute is that flat because my embouchure is wrong?
2. Is it possible to get a flute tuned by a technician?

Thanks smile.gif

Try pushing the headjoint all the way in and turning it out slightly.
Also bear in mind that CD's are nearly always out of tune so it might not be you!

Check that you have around two-thirds of the embouchure hole uncovered as you play. The most common cause of playing flat is rolling the flute in too far.

Thanks for your replies. I tried your suggestions, and it got a lot better. Guess it will come with some practice biggrin.gif

I used to always be flat, and discovered that it was because i turned my flute in too far as i played (my old flute was so rubbish it was the only way to get a sound out - since having my new one im always sharp from thinking i need to turn out).

dont just tune using the head joint, use the foot joint too if its that extreme, which it obviously is. also, as they said, maake sure ur not roling the flute in or out too much, and maybe the way you stand, if you aren't getting enough air down the flute you will be flat.

Thanks again for all your replies smile.gif . I’ve been experimenting with posture (of me and the flute) and air speed, and when I play long tones with my electronic tuner I often get them in tune now. Still have to work on keeping it that way when playing a melody though.

Sounds like you're going along the right lines biggrin.gif
