Hi people
I just did my Piano exam and everything went great! Which brings me to the point that perhaps half the time we imagine things to be really bad but there actually really simple! I know that I was WAY TOO nervous for my exam, that was untill i walked into the exam room and my first few pieces were great! (and the examiner was really friendly as well), something that I did not expect!
anyone got similar stories?

They can????
sorry but this is news to me, at least it certainly doesn't apply to music exams when it comes to me! but I thik I can understand what you mean, it's what I would term 'exam satisfaction' (although it usually only works after you have the results)

I've got my piano exam next week (grade 4). I dont think exams are relaxing at all!!! I get so nervous that in my violin exam I couldnt keep the bow on the string. It was horrible!!! I passed but the examiner told me that I hadnt graspd the basics!
I hate exams when you mess up something you've been playing perfectly for months!!! I dont like how it all depends on those few minutes of that day!!!
Luv ya

I never find exams relaxing! And as a consequence always muck up badly. However, for my grade six piano exam for some reason I just became very calm and for once I wasn't shaking and then I played much better than I would normally for exams. Maybe it is something about grade six piano that makes people feel calm and happy when they take the exam!

Well when i went in for my grade 3 and got upset because i could not play a piece to the examiner (god knows why, I was in a right state!) and he gave me a tissue - if thats not a friendly examiner i do not know what is!

Well I have done my grades 1-6 (am doing 7 soon) on 2 different exam boards, and the style and friendliness of the examiners are very contrasting.

I can understand why the examiners come over as 'cool'. I've had students who assumed that they have done really well because the examiner was friendly! We read a lot into body movement and facial expressions....even if they showed some enthusiasm during examining, you could think that you've done well when perhaps you haven't.
I prefer them to be blunt and to the point. At least nobody comes out thinking that the examiner is going to give them all distinctions.
I do remember playing a piece in my Grade 7 (years ago) and I turned at the end and the examiner had his hands behind his head and was smiling. I remember him saying "Thank goodness someone can play this piece well". I was so chuffed. I'm sure he'd heard it played well before though
I did expect a really good mark for it when the results came through. Can't remember what I got...but they do have to be a bit careful.

I know what u mean about blunt examiners. For my violin I had a really nice examiner and when i left the exam room I was ginning like this -

cos i thought i was gonna get a distinction for sure. In the end all I got was a scrape merit. I was crying for days (Im a huge perfectionist - It's either fail of distintion for me)

i found my grade 7 recorder to be my most relaxed exam partly becoz i had had the examiner b4 for grade 4 flute. she woz really nice and gave me some hints to answers etc and it seemed she really wanted to give me high marks. then my grade 8 woz quite relaxed and i woz pretty chilled really, duno whether that woz natural hehe or whether i shud hav been more nervous, ah well, it went well anyway!

Actually, I do find exams relaxing - I'm never really a nervous person when it comes to tournaments/exams or stuff like that (I only get nervous after I eat before performing). All my examiners with the exception of one were pretty friendly and courteous and it just helps to walk in that room, do your stuff, and leave knowing that you've finally done it - even though you might not have done your best, it's finished. . . well, for now.

I am really relaxed in school exams, but i have never taken a music exam - yet - so i can't comment on that one.
I heard somewhere that exams are there so you can show off what you know, so thats what i think before i go into the exam.
