I play trumpet and am in the middle of teaching myself keyboard. I want to start to play another instrument, but I need one that isn't too expensive so that I can either save up for it easily, or ask for it for Christmas or my birthday. Anyone got any ideas ?

What sort of price range are you looking at?

And do you have an instrument group in mind - do you fancy trying strings? What context do you see yourself playing in - orchestra, band, solo?

Not sure what your trumpet teacher might think if you take up a different wind instrument. I'm no expert on the mixing of embouchures, but I know that there are schools of thought who say playing a woodwind and brass instrument is not a terribly good idea. I believe the French haorn and flut are one exception. Depends how seriously your intentions are with the trumpet as to whether a woodwind instrument would affect your playing.

Otherwise, perhaps a string instrument?

I've tried french horn before, as I struggled with trumpet after having a brace fitted. Trumpet will always be my main instrument, so taking up another instrument is just for fun really. Flute sounds like a good idea. Thanks smile.gif
