I believe that the reason ABRSM took out some easy scales for Grade 8 is because they're covered in the lower grades.
I mean,
will the examinor ask a grade 8 pianist to play C major in contrary motion?
At Grade 8, I don't really think that it would be a problem! But no, they shouldn't because you don't have to do contrary motions at Grade 8. If you buy the Grade 8 and Grade 7 books, then you will have all the scales, 7 covers all the keys, even though you just play one group in the exam and has contraries in it. Grade 8 doesnt have all the keys but has 6th aparts and all the positions of arpeggios. And really, the few that are missing, they're not hard to work out as quite a few fingering patterns are similar/the same! In scales, there is no scale that doesn't have a fingering pattern that is the same as another. I don't think scale patterns will ever leave me!
