sad.gif i think i failed. *sigh*

here's my programme:
prelude & fugue in f# minor - JS Bach
'pathetique' sonata no. 8 - Beethoven
impromptu in G flat - Schubert
Hungarian dance No 149 & No. 153 - Bartok

here are some of my viva voce questions..

1) what is a subject?
2) show me where it comes in throughout the fugue
3) what are Beethoven's other works in C minor?
4) what sort of character in conveyed in the Pathetique?
5) how did the harpsichord work?
6) tell us about Bartok?
7) why did he like folk music?
8) how did he research folk music?
9) explain the rondo form
10) how did you manage to bring out the melody in Schubert's impromptu?

this is roughly what i remember..

i made SO MANY mistakes. slips in ALL the pieces. and in beethoven's pathetique sonata I stopped for more than 3 seconds :'( sigh... something went wrong that day. halfway through my pieces i almost gave up. i think it was the piano..

any chance i can actually pass? sad.gif

one question.. which part of the exam consists of 50 marks and has the passing mark of 24?

Oh dear, poor you sad.gif

Don't forget, you only remember the worst parts of an exam. That applies whether for grade 1 and for FRSM smile.gif

it's the recital mark which u need to get 24 marks in order to pass.

don't worry ! slips are normal ! I made slips for my DipABRSM too, 6 in fact, where 3 of them are wrong loud chords ! yet i still passed with 34 marks for recital. not a great score, i know, but i'm quite ok with that score. slips are very normal....even great pianists have them too.

i hope you did well for your viva voce & quick study !

good luck for your results !

Don't worry. I made a big mistake in one of my pieces, where I forgot to do a shift, got in a muddle and had to stop before jumping back in again, but still managed to get about 38 for the recital part, I think.

I'm taking my dipABRSM this year!
You're scaring me!!

i saw my examination sheet on the table. i only got 20 :'( thats how bad i did. :'(

Well don't let it bother you too much. Even the best performers make slips and get nervous. It's not the ned of the world. smile.gif

20 is the total mark or only the recital ???
benjaminja
Oh dear, I wish the examiners wouldn't have their marksheets in view, it's terribly offputting. In grade 8 violin I could see what I'd got for the first piece and wanted to tell the examiner I thought he had made a mistake, perhaps he hadn't been listening properly? smile.gif

But don't worry, it's perfectly possible you misread the sheet. Unfortunately there's now an 8-week wait. If I were you I'd put the whole thing out of your head. Do NOT dwell on it, it only makes things worse.

20 is my recital marks :'( i think i saw it right.. it was a big 20

can't help but dwell on it.. wish i could turn back time or something..
but thanks ben smile.gif i'll try.. thanks so much k

Alina Piano, don't give up.
I got only 17 for recital in the 1st DipABRSM exam.
I keep on practicing and finally got pass.

QUESTION 1

What is the subject???

What should be the answer??
Don't understand what it means!

I just don't understand why on earth did you choose pathetique? It is supposed to be a very difficult for Dip ABRSM.

I have chosen Sonata in Ab and I am still struggling through.....gosh...

Sounds like you need to learn about fugue; there are plenty of resources on the Internet. Off the top of my head, you'll at least need be able to define:
  • a subject;
  • a counter-subject;
  • an answer;
  • the difference between a real and tonal answer;
  • an exposition;
  • stretto;
  • episodes;
  • false subjects/redundant entries.
Unless you're playing a fugue it's unlikely you'll be asked in-depth questions on one, though.

ditto to YAP.

i love the pathetique. thats why i chose it. i would get tired of it if i didn't like it. i didn't think it was difficult for me at all. i kind of breezed through practising the piece. until the dreadful examination day.. tsk tsk.. hehe
