So I've got this violin - I'm going to attempt to teach myself as I'm already having clarinet lessons and I'm not rich(!). I had one lesson from somone at work and she has taught me the basics (violin hold, bow hold, first position fingerings and some technique tips) - my question is, can anyone recommend any books/websites (pref websites) that might be useful? I'm not intending to make particularly fast progress at first (obviously!). I've seen the violin masterclass wbsite but does anyone know of anything else in a similar vein?

Thanks!

I know lessons cost a bomb, but even if you just get 10 and then none for a year, it will be so worth it. If you pick up bad habits now, it will be really hard to get rid of them, trust me, I'm trying to un-learn bad habits and it's (nearly) impossible. Instead of buying a book about technique, spend that money with a very good teacher.
Otherwise, I suppose if you know what you SHOULD look like, practice in front of a mirror all the time so you can see any problems.

I'm hoping that I can get some more one-off lessons later on - this teacher is really flexible (it's a side line to her full time job) so I'm lucky in that when I can afford another lesson I can just mail her and fix a time. I'm going to do the mirror thing and take it really slowly so that I'm always aware of what I'm doing.

One of the reasons I chose violin is because I have a stiff shoulder and I thought it might help loosen it up - and I've already noticed that I feel it immediately if I'm in the wrong position so that's a bit of an unexpected bonus! My hand also seems to automatically go into the correct bow hold as soon as I relax so hopefully I should be ok for now!

Thanks for your reply!

Agree with everyone else. My technique got so bad that i've had to go RIGHT back to basics now, which is slowing my progress right down. I'm not being entered for another grade for at least a year. I could go on all day about how angry I am I got into such bad habits, but I won't wink.gif
But it is good that you have had someone show you the basics, even one or two lessons before you take a longer break will help you!

I don't know anything about music centres....! Does anyone know if there is one in Brighton?

I don't think there is any music centre in Brighton that offers lessons, there are for pupils still attending secondary school but I'm assuming you're an adult and I don't think there is that much around here for adult learners.

The Brighton and Hove Music and Performing Arts website is: www.bhmpa.org.uk I think.
