I'm trying (very trying) to play webster's scherzo from the Suzuki Book 3. I'm trying to work out what the metronome marks for the two bits of the music would be. The first section is marked presto and the second is marked meno mosso.

Any ideas?

Meerkat,
I asked about this same piece last year, as our metronome gave 168 for presto and I wasn't sure if that indeed was a gr 4 exam speed for cello. AmandaL said 112 was Presto on a gr 4 violin piece. Since then I've been loaned a Suzuki CD of the Webster and it comes out to about one crotchet at 144 for the main bit.

The books give a nice repertoire - but I sometimes feel that the music in them makes cello seem like an extreme sport - they can be pretty challenging!

I started off just with the grade 1-2 Time Pieces - have you got a copy of that for violin, Michael? I found that pretty good, once I'd got through a tutor book.

Yeah I got the copy for Violin with music to listen to. I didn't know you were talking about cello, no wonder I couldn't find the music you were talking about on volume 3 tongue.gif .

I think its is a nice way to learn but I think it has been over advertised, make it sound more than it is. To me its just a method of copying, and if you let children to copy from the best, ofcourse it will sound better than the kids who just play what they read from music sheets. Listening and comparing its the main factor of Suzuki Method I think.
