Hey, I have been asked to play a short piece for an Interview at College.
Does anyone know any short pieces which could show me off a little (Trying not too be too big-headed cool.gif )
Maybe around Grade 7/8
Thanks

Firstly, good luck for the interview!

What sort of standard are you? In your signature, it says you're doing Grade 6 in the summer - it would be better to do a short Grade 6 piece well, than a complex Grade 8 badly. smile.gif

Hmmm... maybe, but I am able to play grade 8 pieces well and I am used to playing grade 8 pieces, my piano teacher wants me to go in for 6 before 8 so i am familiar with exam procedures etc....
So... I do have one idea, the 1st Fantastic Dance by Shostakovich but..... wink.gif

Go for something you really enjoy playing and that you are comfortable with.

But most of the pieces are really long, I'd like to play a new, short but hard, piece

Why not the Rach C# minor prelude...

What about trying one of Grieg's lyric pieces. 'Wedding Day at Troldhaugen' is very popular. Grieg's lyric pieces are graded in order of difficulty on Piano Street Forum.

That was my initial idea, but I assumed it was too long and I didn't want to bore the tutor as it is quite repetitive, Ill check on those Grieg pieces

If you play a piece well, you won't bore anyone smile.gif

wub.gif I'm walking down the aisle to this!!

How short does it have to be? (Wedding day is about 10 minutes...!)

I would suggest going for something you're already confident with - I know what interviews can do to nerves. If you want something short and fast, Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in C (Kp513) fits the bill.

Most probably 1 or 2 minutes, as I need time to ask questions, i evenneed to show I can sight-read and other random aurals!

Wow fantastic choice! cool.gif It is usually between 6 and 7 minutes long. As I mentioned in another thread I am playing for three family weddings this summer (one uncle down, one uncle and one brother to go) and this piece is the one I always look forward to performing the most, it's just legendary!

As for short pieces, how about Mendelssohn's Spring Song? I would be inclined to say that it is about grade 7 standard and it is usually about 2 and a half minutes. smile.gif

I had difficulty choosing a third piece for my Grade 8 (Trinity) and eventually plonked for a Dave Brubeck piece - "When dad played the harmonica". It's short and brisk - a bit "tongue-in-cheek", and despite only having spent a few weeks on it, it was my highest mark. (I spent months on Haydn and Tchaikovsky.) It's in the 1999-2000 Trinity Piano book, if you want to take a look.

Maybe you can try one something like Dvorak's Homeresque , it lasts for about 2 or 3 minuites and it is very lovely...
