I'm listening to The Unthanks through Spotify (I love that software).
Heard them on Radio 2 last week whilst driving home from Birmingham, so thought I'd see if they're on there, and bingo!

I think you have to listen through it. Though even then not everyone likes his approach to Bach.
He's not alone though. I have recordings with "certain embellishments" by conductors. Barbirolli joins in with great gusto towards the end of Elgar's "Introduction & Allegro for Strings".

The hum of the fan in my laptop

I've got the hum of the laptop, and the tapping of keys, but as background to listening to last night's Performance on 3 from Radio 3.
I caught a little snatch of music last night whilst I was driving to my Violin lesson, and immediately heard music that put me in mind of Berio, or Ligeti, or similar sound-worlds, but couldn't quite place the composer. Looked it up today, and it was Colin Matthew's Violin Concerto. I'm glad that I'm catching it on "Listen Again", since it's not been recorded yet (the broadcast was of the World Premiere), and I want to hear the full piece.
Curse you Radio 3! Now I have another composer to add to my "must investigate further" list!

OK so Richard Thompson gave me Linda Thompson, Philip Pickett some bloke I've never heard of and "Mozart Oboe Quartet radio"

gave me a rather strange arrangement of the Gran Partita.
So the jury's out.
Oh I've just spotted an "oboe s3x god" station. Must be good!!
EDIT - Whoa, how does that work then? I selected the "Oboe" radio and got the first movement of the Albinoni Concerto. Next came "The Seeds - Flower Lady and her Assistant" whoever they are. Why??? Ah, yes there's an oboe in the backing track. I guess Soft Machine will be along anytime now.

It's the unexpected stuff that makes it worth using! I very much enjoyed 'Fridge Radio' - didn't know there was so much post-rock out there! The Seeds: first generation American psychedelic punk, IIRC.

Currently listening to my son do his piano practice: He's just finished about 3/4 hour on Sofigieto by CPE Bach and is now working his way through something called Prelude 4 from Latin Preludes by Christopher Norton. Before that he played a Beethoven sonata (probably - I was at Tescos).
It is both depressing and encouraging: He is far better than I was at the same age (or even 2 years ago).
