The recording is now on BBC2 smile.gif

I've got that on too - although it's not identical to the one on radio, and I understand it's recorded at a different time, as much as two weeks earlier. Some of the carols are the same arrangements - I think the descant to 'Once in Royal' is new. O Holy Night wasn't on the 3pm one.

Impatient so an so, was there ever any doubt that you would get your wish?

My favourite is the Blue Danube and I always get my wish on New Year's Day too.

We always try to watch the VPO New Year. There were some pluses this year: Pretre's control of the audience at the pseudo-start of the Blue Danube and during the Radetsky come to mind; also the excellent ballet couple from Paris. The strings were up to their usual standard and I always admire the accuracy and smooth sound of the horn players on their single Vienna horns. In the Offenbach overture, the clarinets coped brilliantly with the usual absence of beat; somewhat less so the oboes and flutes. The siting of the high camera just behind a statue holding a lyre with kinked strings was slightly unfortunate, but the voyage down the Danube was beautiful.
Clarimoo
Yes, I agree with you kenm, I thought Pretre was wonderful, he's fabulous with the orchestra but he can also controll the audience perfectly and with such small but perfect gestures. He's a delight to watch.
biggrin.gif
I always enjoy watching the dancers and the architecture.. it's all like a magical other world that can only be glimpsed (well by country bumpkins like me anyway) on New Year's Day. blink.gif

I had forgotten just how huge continental rivers are compared to our British ones.

I wonder how much money you have to shell out to be a member of that audience.

I have been searching the Musikverein site for prices without success. I get the impression that if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
