Currently listening to Stop Dragging My Heart Around-Stevie Nick and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers smile.gif
Robodoc
The album called "Variations" by Andrew Lloyd Weber, played by Julian Lloyd Weber and the Rock band Colosseum II, with Gary Moore and with Barbara Thompson and Rod Argent grafted on as well.

Apparently it was written in payment of a bet between brothers concerning the outcome of a Leyton Orient football match (Andrew lost). It was later adapted to become part of "Song and Dance" (the rest of which was taken from the album "Tell me on a Sunday", lyrics by Don Black). The Theme & Variations 1-4 are the theme music for the South Bank Show.

I've just transcribed this bit (introduction theme & variations 1-4) for flute & piano - finished it this evening, so far. Just got to show it to my flute teacher and get his comments.

Definitely the best thing ALW ever did (well the ONLY thing I'm prepared to listen to). I've always liked the Shadows variation.

Barbara Thompson is fabulous on it and it's probably the best thing any of the Colosseum guys ever did. I saw them at the Reading rock festival one year and they were rubbish. The audience was so underwhelmed, we all watched some guys building a pyramid from 4 pint beer cans instead. The band actually stopped to find out what was going on.

Now where's that CD?

Right now, I'm listening to 37 Stitches by Drowning Pool.

The tenor sax solo from Average White Band "Pick Up the Pieces" on repeat on my iPod (and yes, I have used Audacity to cut out just the 40 seconds sax solo) in the hope that it will sink in sufficiently to aid my attempts to work it out and play it tonght. I'm probably on to a loser though, because it's just too high. I might be able to get the first 8 bars down if I'm lucky.

We had an air guitar "competition" at school in a music practice room one lunch time...a little year eight won by playing air guitar to this, although one of the sixth formers had to play it on real guitar for him! laugh.gif

Did you enjoy it? I heard it for the first time a couple of years ago and started a thread on it because I'd never even heard of it. The thread's here if you're interested. I never got round to buying a CD so thanks for reminding me - I'll put it on my list!

I'm listening to Casta Diva wub.gif

Thanks for the link Skylark - very interesting, especially the analysis of why it's not better known (which I have to agree with). Yes, I do like it, a lot, though it took a little while to grow on me! We're actually performing it next Thursday, and I've got to say it's one of the hardest things I've ever attempted! So I'm listening to it constantly at the moment, in the hope it'll start to sink in. The timing, rhythms and opposition of the different parts are a nightmare, its incredibly fast in places, add to that how hard the Olde English words are at times - it's one of those works where, if you lose your place you're stuffed! BUT it is also enormous fun, ridiculously funny in places, I love the fourth movement all about the Nuns of Norwich giving full latin requiem mass for a pet sparrow, and when it all comes together it does sound great smile.gif
