You've missed the quarter finals!

Well it would take you about 30 seconds to google "young musician of the year"Chris, which takes you to the BBC website for it, which tells you when they're on the TV. So really, it would be less time consuming than posting a thread and expecting others to do it for you.

sarah-flute
Sorry, when Chris posts the bazillionth thread asking something he could find out in seconds if he would just look for it, I lose patience.
Patricia
Maybe he just wants the human touch... sad.gif
sarah-flute
Considering in the past he has asked questions about things, been asked "why don't you read X, it tells you what you need to know" and has replied "I couldn't be bothered..." I'm afraid I lack sympathy. Maybe I'm being mean... but it happens a lot, and Chris doesn't seem over willing to do research himself or read up himself if there's any chance of someone else doing it for him. Sorry, it's just the way it comes across when someone is always saying things like that about stuff that is easy to find out, and especially when they say it's because they can't be bothered. It's lazy. Nuff said.

Anyway, he has the link now rolleyes.gif

Quick reminder - the piano semi final has just started on BBC 4. smile.gif

Hmmm not sure I agree with the choice of piano winner. It would have been nice to hear more of the performances instead of having 2 sections squashed into one programme. I played the Schubert Sonata in A for my dip last summer and didn't feel that the winner played it very expressively...
bohemian
I prefered the guy from Wells. He was a bit special.
You know the percussionist who did Roadworks, wasn't one of his accomps the percussion winner from a previous year, who did the same piece?
lillylemon
Yeah I think it was last time I think. Also, I went to school with the guy who wrote that piece

Yes, Lucy Beeson who went to Chets, I have a friend who went to Chets with her!

I found this programme disappointing too: apparently the whole semi-final will be broadcast later this week, so why did they have to put this one on to give away the result first rolleyes.gif if I'd have known the whole thing was on later I wouldn't have watched....

Still at least we do get to watch the whole thing. I have an opinion to venture, but I shall wait until I've heard the whole performances before confirming this is what I think....

I am appalled that this has now been put on BBC 4. WE DON'T ALL HAVE THIS CHANNEL, BBC!!! I won't be able to watch the semi-finals, which I always really look forward to.

And what kind of message is it giving, removing this major music programme from the mainstream channels?

I didn't know that!! That's really bad sad.gif

Hey Benjaminja - I was thinking the same. I don't know if you can do this, but I'm tempted to go out to Tesco tonight and buy a digibox - apparently they cost about £30 and you basically just plug them in between your normal arial and your TV using the 2 or 3 bits they give you, then you can get digital TV down your normal arial. I haven't been tempted before since I thought 5 lots of rubbish was more than enough, but I really want to see the string final!

It's at times like this when it's tempting. But I still don't think the BBC should be allowed to get away with putting this on one of their minor channels.

Actually, I couldn't go out to Tesco as I don't drive... blink.gif
zoda
again, I don't disagree benjaminja, as I have had the same thoughts. However it seems that in a couple of years time BBC 4 will be no more minor a channel than BBC 2 - they are going to switch off the analogue signal altogether so in order to continue receiving what you and I consider to be the "main channels", we will have to go digital, which means we will all either have all the free digital channels, or nothing at all dry.gif .

It's all very well complaining about cost of £30 to get a digibox, but there are still some areas of the country where one can't get the channels anyway sad.gif. I think a reduction in the license fee, for the lesser service, in such areas would be in order rolleyes.gif.

Actually, this is true. We have been told that in this part of the country we cannot receive these extra channels anyway without getting Sky! mad.gif dry.gif ph34r.gif huh.gif sad.gif

But it looks as though they are showing less than half of the competioon anyway so you're not missing that much.

It's really been reduced so much now that it must be frustrating to watch and I have heard that it is not quite so satisfying to take part in any more as they reduced the playing time for each round so much that the best players haven't time to choose a programme to reflect their strengths adequately.
neil.clarinet
Luckily we have BBC4, I'm at home just now and am watching. But it is giving a very bad message to music like this.

The cut down versions are annoying with a dumbed down commentary: apparently they're going to show the whole things later, I think they're just trying to sell it as a bit of a reality TV show rolleyes.gif.

We're in an area that can't get BBC 4 (and it's not remote) but fortunately we're in a rented house which came with a sky dish and box so we can get the free channels (but we don't pay a subscription to get any others...).

Well I've got my £29 digibox. Initially very impressed. Very small, very easy to connect up even for a wire - o - phobe like me. Easy to use remote control, with batteries included. Lots of channels listed, on comes BBC 1, noticeably crisper than analogue. Then I try ITV, and five eighths of a see through stretchy head slowly forms against a sea of black polygons. BBC 4 varies between being annoying with bursts of OK reception, towards perfectly good reception later on at night. Other channels vary, but all the ITV channels, together with Channel 4 and Channel 5 are hopeless until later at night.

A quick google directs me to some FAQ about digital TV, one of which is along the lines of "why is this so rubbish?" The helpful answer is along the lines of "because although we told you you could get digital TV through a normal aerial, what you actually need to do is ring some organisation with a name like "The Institute of People Collecting Money for aerials just when you thought you already had one". The local IPCM rep tells me I need a digital aerial which is likely to cost me £195 and can't be fitted in time for tonight anyway.
Celloma
I don't know whether you can receive BBC4 well during the night, but if you can and you have a video or DVD recorder, the semi-finals are shown again at around 3.am. (The time changes slightly each night so you need to check each time). Hopefully the digibox has come with instructions for wiring it up to both a televsion and video/DVD. If not, perhaps someone here who is more "wiring aware" than I am could make some suggestions!

Good Luck!
zoda
Thanks Celloma! that's a really good idea except that I don't know how to use the video recorder blink.gif I think I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope by 9pm the reception is OK!

Have you tried 'wiggling' the aerial connector? I don't know if it is just your area which has 'only just' got reception, but quite a lot of places can recieve it with a normal aerial. Check your internal connections before you spend a lot of money.

Don't know if you've already done this but if you go to http://www.freview.co.uk and enter your post code, if you might need a new aerial it will say this:

"Congratulations the postcode you entered is in a FREEVIEW area, although you may need a new type of aerial."

Having said that I know a number of people who can get freeview in areas with this message without the need for a new aerial.
zoda
Thanks, AP! I think the internal connection is OK, and feel confirmed in this because the reception of some channels is absolutely perfect whilst the reception of other channels is non - existent. If it was a faulty internal connection I would have expected it to have a more uniform effect across the channels. I did do the postcode check before buying the box and it simply came back as we are a freeview area - no mention of any problems. The aerial rep. I spoke to is based in Chester, and he said this is a common problem in the area - I appreciate he might just be saying that to get the business, but I feel like I haven't got much choice other than to trust what the "specialists" are telling me.

Anyway it's now less than 3 hours before I find out whether I can the string final ......
Tess
Hmm, looks like we are going to miss almost the whole lot! ohmy.gif Forgotten all about the QFs, etc, so far. sad.gif

Tonight we can watch. All other days, we are out especially Saturday when the family will be out on an unmissable barn dance. smile.gif The new video recorder has just arrived. Let's hope we can sort out soon how to pre-record. A techno-idiot, I am.

One of the oboists lastnight played the piece that im doing for my grade 8 (on sax)! And she played it far better than i ever could!
