I believe by recording yourself of your playing gives you more confident in terms of performing... it also let you realise how good your playing is!! Because when I practise, I feel that I'm totally like rubbish, but by recording my own playing, it's not really so bad...
Or maybe I've just improved....haha

A digital camera...
I recorded my piano playing not violin though... although I use to in the past.
