i would have liked the guitarist to win - i think he played the most listenable piece, but then Mark is a superb player.
crazy cow
I thought he was great, the guitarist was great and I loved what I heard of the pianist too (but I missed the beginning that they kept talking about!)

I missed the begging as well - that was annoying - i had to do something on the computer for mum and then realised it was on!
nicki_flute
I couldn't find my thread haha!

It is so nice to see someone so happy about winning smile.gif He played superbly.
lillylemon
Does anyone know who won the final because I was at work and missed it
Thanks
nicki_flute
Mark Simpson, clarinettist smile.gif

Mark was so good, I wish I could play like that! I missed the pianist, was she good?? (well, obviously she was good, but you know... rolleyes.gif )
mrbouffant
Not the percussionist? For shame! The Macmillan is a wicked piece.. so funky!
organist_katy
I missed the actual performances thanks to Doctor Who biggrin.gif so I can't comment on who deserved to win, but I thought the way Mark reacted was really sweet.... patronising seeing as I'm younger than him! Oh well smile.gif
Noodelz
I missed the pianist. I would have liked the guitarist to win as well. Mark was good anyway although I didn't quite understand his piece. huh.gif
Oddball
I don't think I've ever understood any of Mark's pieces! He deserved to win, he's such a cool, down to earth chap smile.gif

I thought the guitarist's piece was pretty but a bit nothing...

He was my joint 1st choice - not my sort of music to sit down and listen to on the stereo but wow, what a performance. I thought he was going to win, though in my personal taste Mark just edged it.

Anyone know who came 2nd and 3rd?
sarah-flute
I don't think they have 2nd and 3rd...?
noodle
Do they not?
Noodelz
I think the cellist got into a school as a runner up prize.
sarah-flute
She wasn't 2nd though - she was "best of the rest" - ie of those who didn't make the final.

I didn't see/notice a 2nd or 3rd prize being awarded...
Noodelz
Ooohh, OK. Guess I should pay more attention next time.

Yay! Mark's the first clarinettist to win since Emma Johnson in 1984. The Nielsen isn't my favourite piece in the world, but he did play it very well, and he deserved his win. I also liked the trumpeter, and the pianist also played well.

I'm afraid the percussionist's piece didn't really do it for me........
noodle
My sax teacher's teacher was one of the judges! smile.gif
nicki_flute
Who was that Noodle?
noodle
Thea King was her clarinet teacher.

Can't believe you lot are dissing the Macmillan. It wasn't broadcast with the best balance though.. the orchestra were too distant compared to the level of the percussion.. It should be much more equal in balance than that...
bohemian
Macmillan is well cool smile.gif But I didn't like that particular performance of it.
Thought the pianist was good!

I thought the orchestra sounded a bit quiet on that - with a more equal balance it would perhaps have been better.

Definitely, especially during the "hocketting" section early on... I'll have to dust off my Colin Currie recording to readjust my ears I think smile.gif

It was a real pity the guitarist played such a lame work. He should have given the masterpiece that is the Arnold guitar concerto an outing. Would have won for sure!

Good to hear the pianist playing something slightly outside of the core repertoire. Shows a bit of independent thinking which I think is so important in a young artist - rather than just conforming to the accepted "norm" or whatever their teacher says..

My vote (if I had one) would have gone to the pianist, Cordelia Williams. I just thought her playing was out of this world. But then the judges seemed better placed to comment on the technical wizardry needed to master the Nielsen with its alternating screechy and quiet bits. My biggest bonus was the percussion concerto - my wife and I decided to watch the first two minutes of it just out of curiosity, thinking we'd be a bit bored, and instead we were riveted from the word go. The percussionist seemed like a kid on Christmas morning - with the big dangly tubes at the end being the best present saved till last!
