Well, as some of you know I started to mess around on the cello a few weeks ago and a couple of you (probably accurately) described it as a form of work avoidance because I was getting to a hard stage with the violin. blink.gif

Well, I bit the bullet and took my first cello lesson today with a teacher who plays in one of the Orchestras in Paris but, luckily for me, comes home at the weekend and home happens to be the same city as me.

I really enjoyed the lesson and am looking forward to working on my goals for the week and - I have a sneaking suspicion that I may well have chosen the wrong string instrument in the first place - I just feel I connect better with the cello and I love the sound it makes. Of course, this could simply be the honeymoon feeling of a new instrument but, in any case, I am lucky enough to have no more work commitments until September (apart from five days examining) so I can do BOTH violin and cello and make my decision when the schools go back in September.

Not sure what the point of this post is other than to say that I loved my first lesson and am now a confirmed serial instrumentalist and would be cellist!

Sounds fabulous, Allan. Don't worry about the creeping multi-instrumentalism - just embrace the indecisiveness... It makes life so much more interesting.

Sounds like you've found yourself a really good teacher, too, which is really half the battle won, isn't it?

I have embraced the chaos and it feels GOOD! You're right about the teacher, too - he's very enthusiastic and it helps a lot.

This is all your doing, flute-devil! I was fine on the violin until you infected me with your multi-instrument shennanigans... and we haven't even MET! You're good.... laugh.gif

Well, it's been about a week of consistent practise of around an hour a day and I have to say that my intonation on cello appears to be as good as my violin intonation already (and that took - and still takes - SOOO much work to achieve). I seriously think I may just have always been a cellist rather than a violinist. I played by violin this morning for an hour and - apart from the relative ease of it because I'm more used to it - it didn't blow me away. When I play the cello (and I'm playing really basic stuff at the moment) I feel like I connect with the instrument more.

I love my cello! Hurrah!

That's so lovely to read, Allan!

I think a second string instrument is always much easier to get your head round than your first. I've just started messing about on the viola, having got to a reasonable place with my cello intonation. I'm finding my viola intonation is already pretty solid.
