I've been thinking about getting an electric guitar of some kind, to get my head round the differences between classical and electric.

I'm not sure whether I should look at an electric or an electro acoustic, and wondered if anyone could give me a sense of the pros and cons of each?

I want something that will sound ok, it doesn't need to be fabulous, as I don't anticipate playing for anyone other than me, really. So recommendations for brands would be really helpful.

Well the obvious thing would be if you buy an electro acoustic, your going to need an half decent practice amp. I know you've probably heard it before but you get what you pay for in terms of both guitars and amp's. It doesn't help the budget if you buy something now only to realise it isn't what you wanted in 3 months time

And here in lies an age old problem...... We all think that we will never do anything other than be back bedroom picker. But before you know it, you get to play along with a friend who knows a drummer/bass player/singer/ and on it goes from there. Before you realise it it's all starting to get a bit more serious and you realise the limitations of your equipment and you wished you had spent that extra couple of quid and gone for the Gibson.. wink.gif
Don't do yourself down and buy the best you can afford whilst maintaining matrimonial harmony. I don't know your budget but I have one of these. They are solid wood with no laminates at all and it projects itself really well on it's own and it wont break the bank. You can check out any model you fancy at Harmony Central. Get down to your local shop and plug some in and play em. You will never know unless you have a bash and find out what suits you (which will invariably be the £1300 Gibson) tongue.gif

The only electro acoustic I've ever had a go on was a black round backed ovation. I liked it, but the guy had a really good amp set up, which probably helped a lot. I've never really been interested in any kind of electric sound, so I know absolutely nothing about them, really. I guess I don't know what I'm looking for.

I'll go have a play about at Sheehans. Any excuse really. Might have to try out that burquet while I'm there. hmmmmm. Who knows what might decide to follow me home this time....

For beginners electric Yamaha Pacifica 112 - retail for about £180 but you can get them cheaper excellent guitars and used by a lot of pro's as a second guitar Don't buy Squier at this price - they do not last very well

Electro acoustic Yamaha APX5A are good value at about £215 - 220 street price or you can look t Tanglewood - Simon and Patrick - Faith etc but you are edging towards £300 for a guitar then
