I'm an adult learner , viola, now approaching grade 3, and would love to play duets with my daughter who plays the cello, far better than I play the viola! Is there any music for viola and cello in a duet form, or would it all be trios with a violin?
Thank you for your help

Hardly an ideal solution, but it would always be possible to find a duet for 2 celli, and play the higher part on viola I suppose...

This is a good site for free duets. If you can read the treble clef too, you might be able to try some violin and cello duets. smile.gif

There is the lovely Beethoven Eyeglass duet for viola and cello. Beethoven himself played the viola part in its first public performance.

There are a few other viola/cello duets available here but I think some of them are transcriptions.

There are also viola and cello duets by Hindemith, Piston, Danzi, Lutoslawski and I think that there might also be one by Rebecca Clarke. Some of the above duets though are difficult, and the music is not easy to find, so you might be better off looking for some easier arrangements of duets for other instruments.

I've played cello and viola duets while we've been waiting for our 1st and 2nd violinists to turn up for our string quartet practice. I don't think they were too demanding either. Unfortunately I can't remember the actual music or composer but if you are interested, come back to me and I'll find the exact titles.

The one in particular I was thinking of is the Mozart Sonata. We've also done the Danzi no 3. There's also the Beethoven Sonatine and a Nocturne by Gordon Jacobs. Fuller Music seem to be very good for supplying string music. Their telephone number is 01594827555 (they don't do on line ordering - they prefer to make sure you've got the right music!)
