Full Version: My Computer Has No Sound!

Just attempted to play some stuff on windows media player, the speakers appear to have stopped working, then tried on audacity (which I've just downloaded - any connection?) which also doesn't work. I've checked that the sound isn't muted and the speakers are actually turned on (and turned up!) and played around with the balance thing, but to no avail sad.gif
Just about to try with headphones plugged in and see if that works, but in the meantime if anyone has any ideas could you let me know? It was working fine last night, I can't understand what I've done to it!
Thankyou,

a good way to check if its not an internal problem is to see if you can reocrd some thing that is playing in media in "stereo mix" mode in audacity - if the track has sound on it then you know that the computer is sending sound to be outputted, so you can assume that your speakers are broken.

:s I don't know how to record on audacity! (and I've just deleted it which probably doesn't help....)

EDIT: headphones didn't work either, but I have the feeling they only work if you have a CD in that drive...and I've trying pushing a few wires in further, but that hasn't had any effect either sad.gif

EDIT 2: headphones don't work with a CD in the drive either... so an internal problem? *panics*

Have you been playing on "The Sims"? - that always seems to disable the sound through the speakers on our computer.
In any case the best thing is to restart the computer; that sorts out the vast majority of problems in my experience biggrin.gif

No (sims doesn't work on my computer!) I'll try restarting it and see what happens!

ah...when you do get it back the record button is the great big read one.
you should have a selection box - one of the ones that opens when you click on the small down arrow, that will have various recording options, including: stereo mix, phone, line in etc... just choose the stereo mix one, its very useful for recording straight from the computer - without picking up background noise.

The sound works!! yay!
Turned it off, still wasn't working, then I had another play with the volume controls...this time it came back the second I moved the 'wave' slider...that was the one before where you couldn't hear vocals properly on recordings - only the accompaniment...oh well it works now, thankyou everyone! (and I'll have another go at audacity!)
