Full Version: Favourite Guitarist? Favourite Style?

My teacher yesterday laughingly pointed out that most of his CD collection is John Williams. I have to say, I love him. But watching TV last night, I also remembered how much I love the playing of the Eagles (I particularly like the multiple guitar sound that they create). Pretty far apart in technique and style.

Who are your favourites? WHat do you like about them?

Personally I love the sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I challenge anyone to listen to Freebird and the literally breath-taking solo in it and deny that it is incredible music.

John Williams used to play every week on the then Granada TV station in the early 60s That plus an admiration for Hank Marvin got me started playing

My heroes depending on genre are

Joe Pass - chord melody and jazz
Django and The Rosenbergs for gypsy
Paco di Lucia for flamenco
Julian Bream and Norbert Kraft for classical

As far as rock is concerned it is Jimi Hendrix who still lights my fire

I have various guitarists who's style I admire. If I was to pick a classical guitarist I would probably pick Julian Bream.
For rock/blues based playing I think everyone I think would pick Hendrix as a major influence and he was years in front of the players of his time and he was very good at what he did, but for me he was a bit of a one trick pony that never ventured far away from his comfort zone. Another great guitarist in a similar style and again unfortunately dead would be Stevie Ray Vaughan.
My own favorites in no particular order are;
Alex Lifeson (Rush) because he really does play outside the box of mortal guitarists.
Don Felder (ex Eagles) because he picks up anything and plays it and is a "genius guitarist" (not my words but said by Glenn Frey). Sadly no longer with the Eagles, who I will be Watching at the MEN on the 20th June.
David Gilmour, "You can give him a ukulele and he can make it sound like a Stradivarius." - Bob Ezrin (co-producer of "The Wall").
John Martyn, Scottish born folk singer-songwriter/guitarist. His music isn't everyones cup of tea but he is none the less a brilliant guitarist.

Oooh really? I didn't know they were touring. Hmm. Maybe I'll make that credit card creak just a bit more....

I can't comment about classical guitarists, because I don't know any. But if I were to pick my favourite guitarist that I do know of, it would have to be Slash from Guns n Roses, though I was told my someone that, Buckethead, a former lead guitarist from GNR, was far more acomplished than Slash was/is.

Does anybody know the name of the Rock guitarist who sometimes used a violin bow to play his guitar with? I think he was in a 1970's band or some kind, know it was a pretty famous band.

Jimmy Page? (Led Zeppelin)

It probably is Jimmy Page, the name definately rings a bell

Thanks

Incidently my brother had a go on his guitar with my violin bow, once! Its certainly a bit of a gimick thing to do, cos he won't be doing it again, very uncomfortable for him.
