When learning a new piece, do you learn it from the start with the ornaments, or do you insert them once you've got the other bits sorted?

I do play with ornamentation from the start. If you don't, you may find that you may end up having change the fingering and/or position to accomodate something you hadn't included in your first runs

Thanks OMG. That's what I do too. My teacher had suggested trying to learn the piece without it - but I find it too hard. The piece is really written so that your fingers go to the right place for the ornamentation (if that makes sense) and I find it hard to play without it, and hard also to read the music without it.

I learn with ornaments, with dynamics, tempo changes, the whole lot from the start (or try to anyway).

I would definately learn with the ornaments in, otherwise you'll have to potentially relearn whole phrases due to changing finger positions. If you play something through sightreading it first then I can understand leaving them out, but that would only be to get the idea of the piece as a whole.

I think if you learn without then you probably need to do fingerings etc the same as you would when you played with the ornaments.

I guess it probably varies from instrument to instrument - I often learn things without the ornamentation - but I think always you need to take the ornaments into account when learning a piece even if you don't actually play them till you have the basic notes under control, if that makes sense? ie don't learn an ornamented phrase with a fingering which will make the ornament difficult or impossible.

Probably each person will find different ways of learning more appropriate, I would think if learning with the ornaments in place works for you then go for it!
